I v ifi666fi6yS$Stv I I t i ed system Growth Prodigious y The physical growth of Hill field has been prodigious and the functions of the depot have more than kept abreast of this expansion Due to this growth’ OAD already has many thousands of civilian workers on its payrolls but its employment peak has not yet been reached Many more thousands of both skilled and unskilled laborers are needed now 'and even more will be needed in the immediate care of the in- future to take work-load placed creasingly heavy upon the depot by war production program Building New Hangars Tremendous new hangars are now in the process of construction as are several great warehouses both of which will more than double the present work output and storage capacity of the depot The year 1942 has been a trying one for both military and civilian personnel at Hill field Rapid expansion under high pressure such as has taken place during the months just past is bound to present complex problems Administrative officials work hard and late frequently with expressions of bewilderment on their faces Coordinate Vast Activity It Is their task to coordinate all the varied and complex activities of the depot to keep production up and the waste of time and materials down Civilian employes work hard and late too and they also are sometimes bewildered by the newness and the magnitude of the job confronting them Enlisted men stationed at the field put in long hours side by side with civilians and like the civilian employes they too are sometimes baffled by the complexities of this strange new" war world of today - Big Problem of Adjustment The problem of adjustment for civilian workers today a a huge one Besides the difficulties presented by their jobs which in many cases are utterly foreign to their experience and training they are confronted with problems of housing gas and tire rationing food and clothing shortages The problem of adjustment Is even more difficult for the soldier He finds his individuality submerged in clothing that is a carbon copy of that worn by millions of other men he wears a “dog tag” bearing his name number and blood type he is pitched headfirst Into a new life a new environment a new job the-stepped- £ i i i ! I i t t t i ! f ! s -up COLONEL MORRIS BERMAN Hill Field C O ! and the uncertainty of the future keeps his ’nerves continually at concert pitch Despite these difficulties however a steady stream of well trained men have marched out of the gates of Hill field during the past year and more' air depot groups are now In training For those who have gone the period of waiting and adjustment is over For those still here the period of adjustment is' at hand Submerging his the Individual whether civilian or soldier becomes a cog in the mighty war mechanism that is expanding and operating in all the continents of the world He atom in the is the growing mobilization which hav-- 1 ing won the offensive will never relinquish it self-intere- sts Will Remain Important After the war is won anl over Hill field will continue to be a big operation — unless this nation fails to learn its lesson a second time But according to Vice’ President Henry A Wallace and many other leaders we will maintain mobilization of our air forces to police the world — long after peace is restored Sch action would assure Ogden of continued benefits from Ogden air depot Employs Thousands - In its operation as a supply and maintenance center of a gigantic Enterprise Ogden air depot has brought employment Jb thousands of Ogden citizens s well as to many more thousands from A other areas Its million and a half dollar civilian payroll has boomfd commerce and trade of thE community and has been responsible for bringing new capital into city for investment A fnilitary payroll of some 300 thousand fast-growi- fast-movi- ng ng k 'V' s ' Changes Noted in Reading Trends In Library Report air transportation which is des- tined to become big business in world the post-wThe permanency of Hill field as a key link in any chain of air transportation services and supply installation — and its favor-— able effect on Ogden’s economy hinges on many factors It is indicative that the prospects are bright when consideration is given to thfe theories of which are and rapidly gaining in national and world acceptance The traditional ability of America to lead the world militarily industrially and commercially in the progress and development stands as Even greater assurance to the opportunity Ogden may have to maintain its present forward thrust ar dollars has further added to the community’s income Had Growing Pains As is the case when any enterprise suddenly booms within the community area pains of prodigious growth are keenly felt many inhabitants go through a personal period of sacrificing and social comforts in readjustment to the conditions which inevitably accompany such ‘expansion Most acute has been the housing situation To provide shelter for the thousands of workers that have been brought in Ogden has had to build new shelter units by the hundreds make available many more hundreds through renovation of its existing homes Housing a Major Problem The year ’ ended found this problem a major factor in retarding expansion at Hill field and the added prosperity Ogden business could be enjoying — not to mention its strangling effect on the nation's war effort Not as tangible as the payroll but equally important to the prosperity and welfare of Ogden is the training and education received by the workers at Ogden air depot Prior to the establishment of that depot these employes were for the most part experienced only In agricultural mining and minor commercial pursuits They had very little industrial experience Training Will Be Important When the war is over however they will find themselves trained experienced and equipped to readily fit into' the rapidly developing Industrial enterprises invading Utah and more particularly in the field of aviation and v i The fact that fewer books were circulated from the Carnegie free library in ‘1942 than during 1941 is no special cause for anxiety Elvk L Wattis librarian indicated in her Annual report It means merely that readers Hill Field to Play Leading Role After the War structure a police organization and its own transportation' well-develop- administration building Acfoss bottom a repair hangar at night unusual shot of one of Uncle Sam’s war birds the colors displayed at dress parade front of the huge engine repair shop a mechanic city ironing out ‘bugs’ in an army plane engine a part of the vast of barracks which has sprung up at the field Insets: parked cars of the thousands of civilians employed at the field a crew of workers including a woman working inside a plane Destined to play a vital role in the progress and prosperity of this community is the Ogden air depot at Hill field — just as the building of the Union Pacific railroad three quarter of a century ago brought to Ogden an opportunity for develdfjjment f and growth As the Union Pacific Established sprawling yards I huge roundhouses and shops which contributed work and wealth to the economic life of an agricultural community otherwise relatively static so has the installation of mammoth hangars shops and airport facilities at the Hill field affected Ogden’s economic expanse of land at wind-swe- pt -
