Show SUNDAY MORNING P FEBRUARY 7 1943 They Learn Lore of Outdoors Cooperation of Cities Ogden Man Recalls How ‘Invincible’ Army of Kaiser Was Organized i (Editor's Not: O A Kennedy is Ogden's dean of journalism lie is now engaged in the real estate business but is a veteran newspaperman of the old Coin Harvey days and has always taken a typical newspaperman’s Interest In the passing scene He furnishes here an interesting tale that recals other war days) ment was a certain Ogden citizen By O A KENNEDY years” Heretofore whenever the writer of this article broke into print with a more or less brilliant article a certain lady after reading it was almost sure to comment as follows namely and to wit: "Why Is it that when you write a piece for the paper you must O o always be criticizing something or somebody? And if you must criticize why can you not sometime put over a criticism that would be constructive instead of the other kind all the time?” Wow I What a slap! And perhaps fully deserved So then let us watch our step and stay on the constructive side if possible Recalls War Bulletins In these days when we are watching the bulletins telling what is happening in World war No 2 it might be of interest to review some of the things that happened in World war No 1 The writer well remembers that second day of August 1914 when The Standard posted a bulletin telling how the German army had walked across the line into Belgium and was taking a short cut for Paris Now a personal word The writer had hi office in the basement of the old Utah National Bank building' Other tenants there were: Moroni Skeen J Howard Skeen William J Critch-lo- w J J Brummitt reaL estate brokers Charles Kingston abstractor W P Lethbridge and Frank C Davis insurance agents William A Wheeler Wilford W Thornley barbers and other ten- ants A Busy Place was a busy place that basement with customers coming and going and naturally we discussed the big war in Europe Few people expected at that time that we would some day be involved Indeed President Wood-ro- w Wilson issued a special appeal asking the American public to be neutral and not to take aides A certain Ogden business man was severely criticized be"I am cause he neutral Of course I am neutral I don’t care who licks the Ger- It o wise-cracke- d: mans" Ogden Visitor A frequent visitor In our base Contractors and Civic Groups Aid in Problem 1 -- Germany of Bismarck and Kaiser Wilhelm Early in August he announced: “The German army will be in Paris in six weeks That is the plan Every German officer has known that for In reviewing what has been accomplished one might well ask: “Where would this city and its defense industries be If it hadn’t been for the wonderful work that has been done?” Through the smooth and efficient cooperation of contractors : i x4 Sure ar ce living-propertie- s No qualified person would say that the housing problem of Ogden and vicinity has been solved — or even that it is’ approaching solution But in a retrospect upon the year 1942 it must be admitted in all fairness that virtual miracles were performed toward its solution had come to Utah from Germany some 25 years before He was a citizen but he stiU remembered (and loved) the who enough The German army fought its way to within 60 miles of Paris and might have gengone farther but a French comeral named Foch was in mand in Paris He had a large force of men to protect the city But he did not Vrait to be attacked He grabbed every bus taxicab and truck on the streets filled ’them with soldiers and rushed them out to attack the German army The “six weeks” plan fizzled Received Summons One day our German friend who bought and sold Ogden real estate announced to our group: ‘T have had a summons to report back in the bid seecountry I am for military duty You still a reserve officer in the artillery I wrote to the German consul in Chicago but he said that it would be impossible be-to send me over at this time cause of the blockade by the English fleet” When he was razzed for paying any attention to the summons he being an American citizen he defended his act saying: “If I had not reported I would never have been allowed to inherit any of my mother’s estate Now I am in the clear Berlin will never be able to prove that I would not have gone back anyway if they had found a safe way to take me over” Germans Forced Back The German army was forced to fall back to northern France where it dug in on what was called the “Hindenburg Line” and the long years of trench warfare began The English navy tightened up the blockade of the German coast Some one in our group spoke one day about the certainty that starvation was soon to be an ally of England Our German friend would not stand for It He said: “It will take a long time to starve out the German army For many years it has been the policy to keep on hand aU the time a five-yesupply of wheat That is the army always has on hand enough wheat to furnish flour for bread for the army for five years “It works like this: All over Germany wherever there is a wheat-growin- g area the army i 4 ' Xs F'v S'l--s to care for bridges pre-fabrica- and civic have been a roof for the Ogden The three great projects of the Homes A Associates and thefr affiliated contractors providing 2000 family units In less than one year are probably the outstanding examples of swift and efficient moves to provide for the housing emergency finishing the immense project But there have been other factors too An important contribution has been the willingness of home owners to share their dwellings with those who have come to Ogden to keep the war machines humming Thousands of persons have found homes in remodeled quarters reopened apartments spare bedrooms made-ovgarages and in regular homes With the cooperation of the HOLC and the defense housing authority authorizations have been made for the remodeling of private homes and vacant business properties to make them into suitable dwellings Administrations Help The city and county government has cooperated with federal and military authorities in adjusting problems of public service for housing projects Through this cooperation street sewer Better-Bi- lt to do brganlzed Locally Our German friend said: The reserve system is organized on a local basis as much as is possible In or near every town a detail of soldiers tfiovels the there is a military center or at least one building which is the wheat from his wagon into the hard be to headquarters of a reserve regits bin It going right ment It is in the care of what to starve out the German army” is called the headquarters comOn another occasion our Gerpany In the building is a locker man fellow citizen declared: “A serve ink the crack regiments He wound up with this: “Someand the shock troopers But very few are rejected” where over there is a lieutenant’s On one occasion he explained uniform hanging up in a locker with my name on the door But elaborately the system of reserve I am pretty sure I will never troops was in vogue in Germany A boy served three years in the wear it” When the United States to his Idaho ranch 20 miles back from the passes into the second reserve and later becomes a member of nearest town to stay for the the third and fourth reserve “duration” After he is 50 years old he
