He has served two months active duty at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas, and two years at Hill Air Force Base, Clearfield, Utah. Only five percent of the nations high school students achieve this honor each year. Students are selected on the basis of their academic accomplishments, community service, athletic ability and extra curricular activities. Thurston has maintained a 3.8 grade point average throughout his high school years. He is an Eagle Scout. Thurston was one of the captains of the North Sevier Football Team, he played football for four years. He has been on the Varsity Wrestling team for three years. He was on the Track Team and was one of the Relay Team that took first place at State in the 1600 Meter Relay for the past two years.
