He recommends no more than 10 hours of TV per week for the child. The book points out that reading aloud to the child triggers the read with an exceptionally high level of skill, rests with parents. I didnt write that. Paul did. He is president of San Franciscos Institute of Reading Development. His book, Taking Books to Heart How to Develop a Love of Reading in Your Child, tells how to do that. The book doesnt just tell parents to read to their young children - it tells them how. Here is some of Coppermans advice: Make reading to your toddler who hasnt yet entered school a nightly hour long event. You can start the routine when the child is only a few months old. When reading aloud becomes part of the nightly routine, dont let anything break the pattern. Television is not only filled had news, it IS bad news, Cop-perm- childs imagination. TV, with its movement, sound and color, leaves little to the imagination. Dont hesitate to tell your kids that its Story time. This activity, the author promises, is so pleasurable for children, that once the pattern is established, they will become your strongest allies in seeing that it is maintained. Copperman suggests that you read the story to yourself before you read it to the child at story time. Note points in the story that might call for some kind of special effect, like knocking on a door, or the whoosh of the wind. Paul Copperman says theres a double payoff for instiling a love of reading in your child: Its fun for both of you. PART OF ADULT ED CLASSES Computer class to be held in.
