hunters arc limited to one season this fall as the result of action taken Saturday by the Utah Board of Big Game Control Exclusions were granted for antcrlcss deer and elk and docfawn antelope That means hunters will have to decide whether they want to hunt deer or elk they can't hunt both Buck deer permits arc capped at 97000 and bull elk permits arc capped at 40000 The deer cap was suggested by Gov Mike Leavitt and the board imposed the elk cap due to concerns that deer hunters displaced by the deer cap would potentially flood the general elk hunt All buckbull permits except archcry elk will be issued by random draw along with all other draw permits Application period is May Lifetime license holders must forfeit their deer tag if they choose and draw another bull or buck per5-- GIRLS Well it’s all over but the grumbling for another year It being the annual Board of Big Game Control deliberations and decisions for big game hunting in 1994 It was obvious in our local recommendation meeting held in Richfield last week that the flux brought about by the upheaval of the "system" took a toll on the folks who wanted to get involved It seems as if a lot of folks are just taxing a wait and see attitude this year Only one issue seemed to be common amongst all the approximately 50 attendees — predators There was an apparent frustration as many want something done and were told it is already being done or couldn't be done as in the case of the coyote muzzlcloadcr The cougar could only be harvested by the permit holder with the weapon of choice The use of dogs would be prohibited The funds derived from this special permit would be earmarked for predator control only and could be used to fund programs to bring predator species into balance with their prey species Short sweet and fairly simple but apparently not "acceptable" by the powers that be It would be voluntary — a hunter could choose to buy the permit or not It would in actuality not increase the harvest by a great deal (because the chances arc pretty slim for an archer or muzzlcloadcr to be able to harvest one of these secretive animals) and pioneers entered these valleys al- 50 years ago If you are a deer or elk hunter and if you had planned to hunt this year it would behoove you to watch carefully for the big game proclamation When it comes out get one and study it carefully as the "good old days" have come and gone and the good old days wc are living in now will probably not be recognizable tomorrow There are a lot of changes this year and you may or may not like some of them but you will have to live with them You also will need to change your way of dealing with the hunt recommendations It will also pay to learn the names and phone numbers of your regional wildlife advisory board members and the DWR biologists responsible for the deer herds in your area or where you like to hunt or visit The "system" has changed and will take some getting used to but we’ll probably all adjust and be ready for the next changes w hich are just around the comer most 1 Topsfield Tops In City Hoops The Topsfield Lodge basketball team defeated Sevier Valley Communications 58-4- 6 Wednesday to win the Ve 5-- j 12-2- 2 2-- No one apparently wants to take responsibility for doing coyote control in deer wintering areas and fawning areas An excellent idea expressed by Leo Hovinga which I’d heard during the del iterations this spring was apparently buried somewhere in the process of the system The idea is to sell a $5 cougar permit to any big game hunter who wants one The season would run concurrently with the hunter's big game permit whether it would be rifle archery or even though the rifle hunter would have the best chance there still would be few cougars added to the take It would give every hunter the opportunity to feel like they were able to try to do something to curtail the loss of deer to cougars It would no doubt legalize the few cougars that meet their demise during the hunt only to be wasted And it would provide much-neede- d funds to revitalize the management of this group of species over which man is supposed to have dominion That may rub some folks the wrong way but at least it is better than getting into the mess that Colorado and California are now having by their overprotection or of these species w hich wc here in the west met and overcame every
