Evidently killing an elk in Sevier County is a worse offense than trying to kill a man I Is some innocent person going to have to be killed by Perry before the judicial system will wake up and put this man where he belongs — behind bars? If you are as concerned about this as I am then please call Don the Sevier County Brown Attorney and let him know about Is a S10 million prisoncourt complex really necessary in it After all this is an election year! And it got bluer the closer she got to the cabin She opened the cabin door and realized that the blasted skunk had blasted away in the living room And had done so with vigor within the last fews minutes The odor hung in the The smell permeated every part of the cabin In was in the carpet the curtains the clothes the furniture the bedding the mattresses needed to identify problems and intervene with appropriate consistent action that leads to changed habits and behaviors improve their methods and gram! One complaint from many who attended the first meeting was that adults sometimes don't see the problems clearly and there were not enough children and youth involved who could help them understand At the second meeting about a dozen young people were in attendance and expressed their views in the discussion groups Sevier School District SupL Dr Of the 8760 hours available in a year children spend only 990 or 113 percent in school according to Dr Thome "Though we like to we simply cannot solve all the problems youth face in our hectic world" he said He encouraged the CSR project in carefully identifying specific problems of youth which can be addressed by the whole community cated educators are always try ing to pro- agree" What thir TV "personality" was saying (as he bantered with the newscast's anchors and sportscastcr) We all know by now that the term Daylight Savings Time is a misleading misnomer of the facts Turning our clocks ahead or back or listening to his racket worrying about where he was and where he could go and what he might do! That night Kraig down to the potty and came back and said "I think 1 heard another skunk under the cabin" I assured He was up and down in and out After all his carousing around all night long I was amazed that he hadn't wandered into the trap at some point but he hadn't h'c was still on the loose piliy-pattc- d him he was wrong "I’m sure there was only one" NOT! It wasn’t long before we could both hear him crashing around under the stairs tipping over bottles and crashing over boxes We lie there snuggled in bed at 1:00 in the morning wondering if our little night visitor could get from where he was to where we were After all he had full run of the cabin There was a labyrinth of passage ways under the cabin back in the caves overhead in the rafters There were little cracks and crevices through which a skunk could scurry And the room we were Over the next few months she did every thing she could to get rid of the smell She laundered the bedding washed the towels she even had professional cleaners come in And what about Devin? Could he get into the baby's room? Were the doors closed? What if Devin cried? Would the noise startle the skunk? As the skunk crashed and clunked around downstairs Kraig d into Devin's room to and I spend the night in a small double bed We assumed mom was sleeping soundly downstairs Liulc did we know that she made a few trips upstairs herself to check to make sure the door to the baby's room was dosed and spray some whiz-ban- g chemical stinky bad smells After all the efforts the cabin smelled like a tutti-frut- ti skunk w ith a moth ball twist He was a sticky sweet stinky fairly foul fetid fetor And not only did die cabin slink to high heaven the aromatic liulc critter that caused the slink in the first place was still on the loose despite numerous attempts to catch the fragrant little fiend Something more had to be done And what better time to do it than over Eastci weekend when most of the family would be home And the something that had to be done was tearing up the carpet and cleaning the cabin Kraig Devin and I rode over to the cabin with mom And much to our elation there was a sunk in the skunk trap when we arrived Hur- - sleeping in didn't even have a door! tip-toe- always thought skunks just sort of waddled Now I know they scurry and can do it in a hurry I heard the skunk scamper between the rafters just over my head Then I heard him scratching at the paneling on the wall next to me He was right next to me! I slid away from the wall and about pushed Kraig out of bed It was a very helpless feeling We knew exactly where the darn thing was But we weren't about to go down and shoo him out ask him to leave We spent the night I 1 even stopping them doesn't change how many hours and minutes of daylight there arc The only things that do that arc the seasons I’ll give the misinformed TV weather guy credit for one thing Beginning last December after the shortest day of the year we did start to get more minutes of daylight And that will continue every day until June 21 when we hit the longest day of the year Then it reverses and the days start to get shorter just a minute or two a day So the TV guy was right when he said that next Sunday (which was last Sunday) we would get more daylight because last Sunday had a minute or two more daylight than the day the TV guy was talking ray! we thought The battle is won! Unfortunately our jubilation was a bit premature Even the toilet paper hanging in the bathroom smelled of eau dc skunk It was so bad she couldn't stay thafs supposed to take care of Dr Thome pointed out that Utah has the highest student teacher ratio and spends fewer dollars per student than in any other state in the United States "and yet our students consistently perform among the top ten states on virtually all performance measures" he said adding that dedi- arc generally unbelievable anyway BYJfiN air l-- A) I no more than heard what I didn't believe I’d heard when I turned to my w ife and before I could say anything she said "I know And I This poor soul hoodwinked as arc millions of others was trying to tell us that just because we set our clocks ahead an hour we're going to get an extra hour of daylight could hardly believe my cars T OTFF read-er- a What your opinion? Thia newspaper opinion concerning any subject pertinent to southern Utah While there ia no restriction in length we request good judgment and letters which are to the point Anything of a libelous nature or defamation of character will not be corwldaed for publication Letters must be signed with the writer’s name address and telephone number which must be published along with the letter Deadlines for letters to the editor ia Friday at 12 noon ia But then I realized that what most television weather people say was how great it was going to be next week when Daylight Savings Time goes into effect and we will get an extra hour of daylight I Saturday night we look another approach We opened up the door under the stairs blocked off the rest of the cabin and opened the sliding glass door that leads outside We placed some kippered snacks (stinky dead fish) just outside the sliding door to entice him outside and we sprinkled flour on the floor so we could tell if he had gone It worked We were watching the 10:00 news when Kraig said "I can see tracks The skunk has gone!" Sure enough there were tracks in Inc flour leading out to the kippered snacks And the snacks were all gone Unfortunately there were tracks leading back in too We assumed that after a long winter being stuck inside the cabin he'd be anxious to get out Wrong Why should he leave After all he had all the mice he could eat Plenty of water that dripped from the pipes and now he was being served hors d'oeuvres This was the life Luckily he got hungry for a few more hors d'oeu-vre- s and stopped at the trap that was set under the stairs YES! We got him Unfortunately he had buddies At least one We all spent another sleepless night listening to scurrying and skittering of skunks And no luck the next morning Easter Sunday the trap was bare Needless to say mom is still on her skunk safari While removing the carpet helped immensely she can’t put down new carpet until she catches the odoriferous offenders) And she won't rest (literally) until the last malodorous mammal is gone? Good luck mom! Daylight Savings Time does nothing more than put an extra hour of light at the end of the day if you first set your clock ahead But nature is so stupid that it doesn't pay attention to how or when you set your clock or watch You could move your clock from 12 noon (at 12 noon) back to 8 am but the sun would still be pretty much in the middle of the sky no matter what your watch read So as we turned our clocks ahead an hour for Daylight Savings Time last Sunday morning (or Saturday night) the sun went down an hour later (by our clocks) on Sunday than it did on Saturday But there is a catch The sun (by our clocks) also came up an hour later on Sunday than it did on Saturday So where did we gain any more daylight? We didn't We're just hookwinked into thinking we did If I thought for one moment that by changing my clock I would get more daylight I'd set it back to 3 am in the winter hoping the sun would come up at 4 am and then in the afternoon at 5 pm I'd set it ahead to 6 pm so I would get another hour of daylight then But I know what would happen In both cases I'd have to turn the light on to see what I was doing The sun being stupid only shines at its appointed time in its appropriately appointed seasons I don't want to burst anyone's balloon about how Daylight Savings Time gives us more light But if you want to go along with the TV weather guy and believe that by setting your clock ahead an hour will make the day longer don't hesitate to do it Just don't try getting up the same time in the morning as you did before you set your clock an hour ahead and expect the sun to be up like it was before you changed it because it won’t be |
