Dong! Ding! Dong! Ding! Dong! Ding! Dong! The old bell in the Old Cove School house has been silent for over fifty years but sometimes on a cold frosty morning it seems like I can still hear it ringing out loud and clear all through the Cove from the Joseph Hill on the east to the mouth of Clear Creek and Sevier canyons on the west and south as it peeled out its message to prepare for another day at school in the old rock school house Five days a week that old bell rang out its message: the first bell as we called it rang for about three minutes at exactly 8:30 am to tell us that we had exactly one-ha- lf hour to prepare for school and the last bell rang for a shorter time at 9 am to tell us that classes were commencing A smaller fire alarm-typ- e bell located in the upper hall would ring at 10:30 am to dismiss us for a recess and the big bell would call us back to classes at 10:45 At 12:00 o'clock the small bell would dismiss for lunch time and at 1 pm the big bell would announce that our lunch period was over The same ritual applied at our afternoon recess from 2:30 to 2:45 pm and the small bell dismissed us at 3:30 pm The people of the Cove and Clear Creek Canyon w ere members of the Joseph Ward and all church meetings were held in Joseph until the creation of the Cove branch of the Joseph Ward on June 15 1913 After this all church meetings were held in the lower north room of the school house until the completion of the new church house in 1928 so the old school bell was used to call us to our meetings The church supplied the newly created branch with a piano which was kept in the north room The Cove Branch was organized into a ward on December 23 1917 with Ray Utley as bishop Beginning in 1921 he was also the principal of the Cove School and grades while his taught the 5th-8t- h wife Maude taught the grades Mrs Utley (Aunt Maude) played the piano for all church meetings and with the piano being lst-4t- h in the school room she played it every day at school Weather permitting every day as soon as the bell rang calling us back to class we'd line up single file the smaller grades on the south side of the porch and the larger grades on the north side with the principal in charge and as Aunt Maude played a rousing march on the piano we’d march into our classes The same type ritual happened when the small bell rang for us to leave class There was no mad rush for the door instead we'd all sit up straight in our seats and as Aunt Maude struck a resounding chord on the piano we’d turn in our seats and prepare to stand up and at the next note we’d stand up and then to the music of the piano we'd march silently out of the building During the time that w e had two teachers the lower grades used the lower south room while the upper classes used the upper south room and the church used the low er north room The big bell was located in the belfry high atop the front of the building and the bell rope hung down in the upper hall at the head of the stairs and the small bell was located on the wall nearby The janitor rang the first bell at 8:30 am and the principal was responsible for the rest of the day What a fun lime it was when he'd delegate one of wc pupils to ring the big bell sometimes the rope would lift you right off your fccL How wc liked to hear that small bell ring signaling that classes were over for recess or lunch lime and how wc hated to hear the big bell ring telling us that our free time was over Wc never had much play- ground equipment in those days but I guess wc of our age were more fortunate that the earlier ones s Two swings and two teeter-totter- were built in 1925 and in 1926 the school board had a health contest in the District and the Cove School won a large wooden slide that was really our pride and joy but most of our time we played outdoor games! "Darcbase" "All over the River Come Through" "Steal Sticks" and a form of baseball called Rounders with two or three batters and each time a batter got out he'd go to the outfield and everyone would advance one position and the catcher would become a batter and so on In the Spring wc played Marbles Fatty Ring Boston Pcrg or Poison In the Fall wc played baseball and in the Winter wc played "Fox and Geese" and other winter games It seems we always had something to look forward to The first big event of the school year was about a week after we started back to school in the Fall this was Annual Cleanup Day on the school grounds The old grounds never had any type of we grass The only ground-cove- r had was a profusion of w ceds tumble-weed sunflowers and stink-weeso on this particular Friday we’d all come to school in our working clothes (most of us never had anything else) and bring a rake hoe shovel or pitchfork and we'd go to work on the old grounds What a pile of weeds we'd have by the time the day was over The older boys would usually stack the weeds in a huge slack and when they were dry we'd have a huge bonfire In October there w as Halloween with a dress up party for the entire school and November Rula Ipson 577-281- Paul and Sharon Wood 6 Lake City visited Christie Elna Howes hosted the Craft Club attended by Lena Nielson Elaine Allen and Betty Kac Glcavc funnest time of the year When I was in school we made our decorations we'd start in about two weeks before the big day making paper chains made from strips of heavy green or red paper four inches long and a half inch w idc pasted together in links Some of the chains turned out red some green and some both colors and w ere strung from all four comers of the ceiling to the lamp-cor- d in the center of the room The walls were festooned with red paper bells and green paper Christmas trees About a week before the great day all of the pupils in the room would write their names on a slip of paper and put them in a large box and we'd each reach paste-boarinto the box and very secretly draw out a slip of paper w ith a name on it and this person whose name was on the slip of paper you were to buy a present for the Christmas Party The big party was usually on the night before Christmas w ith a huge tree also decorated with our own FEATURED ON YOUR WHITE & GREEN PHONE BOOK COVER Salt Free- stone
