Although Volume 11 places its major emphasis in music, it also recalls events of general interest. Its first 50 pages deal with the activities of the National Guard Band, which was organized in Ephraim in 1939 under the direction of Milton J. Perkins, and describe activities of the band while stationed at Camp San Luis Obispo and Camp Monterey in California, Camp White in Oregon and in the Pacific area during World War II. Its service in the Pacific area included 10 months in New Caledonia, 15 months in Guadalcanal and then for a time in the Philippine Islands before it was mustered out at the end of the war. The volume lists the names of local men most of whom served their country during the war in connection with the bands activities. Among them are the names of Raymond Cheney, Don Christensen, to the Ephraim Centennial Lloyd Christensen, Kent Chriscelebration in 1954, an account tensen, Gordon C. The book is Prof. Harry A. Deans Memoirs Volume Two, a 340 page document by a man who has been a major contributor to the musical activities of the area for more than 40 years. The volume is based in part on the 27 daily journals that Professor Dean began writing in 1914, in part upon correspondence, in part on newspaper accounts and other contemporary sources. The third volume of Professor Dean's Memoirs is now in the hands of his publishers and it will bring the record That record began for the local scene when the Deans moved to Ephraim in 1934 and Professor Dean began a long career as head of the Snow College Music Dept, and as teacher, performer and composer. These early sparse reports indicate the moose were merely visitors in the state, coming in from Wyoming. The first confirmation of moose as residents was made mid-1930- s d year-roun- in 1947. About 1950 sightings of moose became more frequent and were again mostly in the slope of the Uinta Mountains. Game managers north have observed the growth of the moose population in Utah to coincide with the increase of beaver populations in the same area. Although it is not a proven factor, it is interesting to speculate that the increased willow and marsh areas created by beaver activity may have been responsible for this increase of moose. It was France that created the metric system. Many Americans know more about the French language than they do about the metric system. But indications are that we're picking up information on metrics quickly. The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics encourages you to learn even more about metrics, beginning May 9. Thats the first day of National Metric Week. The United States and Canada have gone a lot of kilometers down the road toward adoption of the metric and fifty-nin- e moose were counted. As the animals were established in sufficient numbers, the first sanctioned moose hunt was conducted the following year. Hunts have been held each year since 1958. Since the first hunt in 1958, some 588 hunters have gone afield to legally hunt Utahs moose. They have harvested 387 animals for a hunter success of 66 percent. moose During the were seen in areas peripheral to the north slopes. To hasten mid-1960- expansion into these other areas, 18 moose were captured in the Bear River and Mill Creek drainages on the Uinta north slopes in January and February of 1973 and transplanted to the Fish Creek drainage on the north end of the Manti Mountains in Carbon County. This plant was supplemented with 19 more animals from the Chalk Creek drainage in February of 1974. Establishment of this population in the worlds southermost extension of moose range was precarious. Biologists believed, however, that habitat was adequate to ensure success. Indications are that the biologists would have been right had not significant poaching and careless shooting of these animals taken place. During elk and deer seasons, hunters, the very people a new moose herd would most have benefited, killed many of the transplanted moose and their offspring. Success of the venture, therefore, is in jeopardy; and only time will tell the outcome. easy To DISTINGUISH actually fell on March 22.
