Show AN OPEN LETTER TO CHARLES W. Akerlow Sheep With Scrapie Sought by Authorities The Utah State Veterinarian, Dr. F. James Schoenfeld, Utah Department of Agriculture, this week issued a call to the Suffolk sheep breeders of Utah to help locate sheep possibly exposed to scrapie a disease of the central nervous system. According to Dr. Schoenfeld, sheep scrapie was recently (From The Utah Independent) and bv a progressive deterioration of the central nervous system. Affected animals become debilitated and uncoordinated in their movements. Practically all die within one to six months after showing signs of the disease. LITTLE, Plaintiff, Dear Mr. Akerlow, And members of the committee known as Gtizens for Good Health: 1 refer to the report in the Tribune (Salt Lake City) of Sept. 22, 1976. It is apparent that you and 1 are not reading the same petition. There is no reference to typhoid nor to cholera nor the elimination of chlorine in the process of purifying our drinking water in the State of Utah. You are only using a scare tactic to intimidate the their people from voting for a law that prohibits, without or its forms approval, the addition of fluoride in any of we that compounds andor other medication to the water is drink, as a treatment of the body. Such treatment ineach n right to regarded as a sacred, personal, dividual. Please remember that chlorine is a purification vital process while fluoride is a medication and there is a difference. That right of choice is not to be ignored by any elected or appointed official. If any community wants fluoridation of its water supply, it has the right to take such a proposition to the people for a vote; and if they should, perhaps, vote yes, they may have their water fluoridated. The question before us is not really to fluoridate the water or not. It is Do the people have a right to choose, or must they obey the dictates of some appointed official who is anxious to exercise unrighteous dominion over the people because he says its good for them? Such thinking is the basis for all tyranny at home and abroad. That kind of thinking, and the experience with the Board of Health on other occasions is the reason for the Initiative Petition. The petition is not a poorly written and potentially dangerous proposition It was not hastily written. It was written with great care by men qualified to write such legislation, and was then reviewed and approved by experts, with a desire to protect the citizens unalienable right to choose what medication he is going to take. The normal processes of government have been tried many times and have been found wanting. The peoples statements expressed at the Boards public hearings were ignored because the deck is stacked against them. The people have been to the legislature and put out the brush fires that were started there by the fluoridationists. But now they are going to require the approval of the people in this matter. This is the last resort. It deserves your serious consideration, for it does not I repeat, it does not imperil the quality of our drinking water nor the It does one thing only it gives back to the health. public their right of choice regarding fluoridation. people In conclusion, there are other inexpensive ways to give your children fluoride if you want them to have it. Just ask your doctor or dentist for a prescription for fluoride tablets. He, will be willing to write you a prescription for them and the cost is less than 1c a day per child in bottles of 1,000. But take them according to the directions given, for fluorides are deadly poison.
