The material was dumped ou the ground by the contractom holding the street paving contracts. As the material was dumped, a scraper followed bringing the street to grade and forming the crown and this was followed by the roller, which hardened the surface. Practically all of the avenues and side oreets in the southeastern part of the city were thus improved. With material from the Eleventh East paving extension. tke department graded and gyavelled five and ont-bamiles of streets; from the Third West paving. two miles of streets; from the Twenty-first South street paving, ono and one-ha- lf miles of streets. With material from cuts tht department travelled four miles of streets. In view of the fact that this work was done in the immediate vicinity of where the cuts were made, the work was done cheaply. Using material from the eity's pit. the street miles of streets at a department gravelled I cost of sc1o4.r1. The cost of this work was materially reduced by reason of arrangements made with the Utah Light & Traction company under which the company hauled the material free of coot in lieu of the city gravelling the space between the tracks, which otherwise the company would have been compelled to improve. This eliminated the toot of haulage on a number of the streets. which is 20 cents a cubic yard for the Mot five miles and five cents a mile additional for any distance over five miles. The coot of loading the train. at the pit is fifteen cents a cubic yard. As an offset against this 4xpense the department turned into the treasury $2,301.- 66 for gravel sold at the pit. The department conetructed 133 cross walks, including a total of 3.349 square yards at a total cost of ,1,1161.14 or 46 cents per square yard. Beitair of Paved Streets.
