Show NFC: Year of Odd Couple YORK (UPI) This could be remembered as the year of the odd couple- in Rah-raGeorge pro football. Allen and suUer, silent Duane Thomas an unlikey duo if you ever saw one are united in a common goal this year. They will be trying to bring Washington its first pro football title since 1942. The Redskins lost last year in the Super Bowl to Miami and are being touted as the team to beat for this season's NFC crown. Dallas, San Francisco and Minnesota look to be the chief chal-ers. Here is a rundown on the NFC teams: NEW h 1 East Division Washington At first glance, the Redskins appear to be stronger this season. Jack Pardee, who retired, is the important loss. Linebacker Dave Robinson was added only as was safety Ken Houston. If he feels like playing Duane Thomas should help. Sonny Jurgensen is hack. Dallas A puzzling team. Once, they finally won the Super Bowl, they seemed to play as if it wasn't worth winning again. They were listless in their playoff loss to Washington. But they still are strong both offensively and defensively. Coach Tom Landrys main problem is who will be the quarterback either Roger Staubach or Craig Morton. Probably Staubach. N.Y. Giants The Giants were impressive in games, and they like to think they are a contender. But the defense is suspect. The of n fense is solid as long as Ron Johnson, the fine runner, can stay healthy. St. Louis Coach Don Coryell brings a new philosophy into the NFL. He will emphasize the passing game similar to his successful seasons at San Diego State. But can Jim Hart do the job. He has been an f type passer. Defense is a main concern no pass rush. on-of- iiike McCorPhiladelphia mick might have taken over the toughest job in football, trying to rebuild the Eagles into a winner. They lost four of their first five exhibition games. Can Roman Gabriel, the former Rains quarterback, breathe life into the lifeless Eagles? The Salt Lake Tribune, Sunday. September 9, 1973 D 9 "Ksr Central Division Minnesota After going last year, the Vikings feel they are about to turn it around. They will feel the loss of defender Karl Kassulke. injured in a motorcycle crash, but the overall defense with Carl Eller and Alan Page is terrorizing. Green Bay The Packers have an impressive running game paced by John and Ma 'Arthur Lar; but neither Scott Hunter nor Jerry Tagge has been able to generate an effective passing game. Chester Marcol again will help with field goal duty and they hope newcomer Jim Del Gaizo can improve the quarterback spot. Detroit Don McCaffertv takes over the .jaching reins but the Lions still have the same problems. They haven't made any major moves to imBrock-ingto- n - the defense. That prove means the Lions will continue to score a lot of mints but also give up many. Greg Landry will run the team again run and himself when not handing off to Steve Owens and Altie Taylor. Chicago The Bears haven't been beaten yet in exhibition play but that will come plenty of times during the regular season. Douglass Bobby should be a single wing running back and not a passer liters probably won't go very-fa- Los Angeles New coach Chuck Knox is under pressure from new owner Cairoll to win. They probably wont. Rams have lost Gabriel and Lance Rentzel, the latter to personal problems. West Dh Ision Atlanta Nonu Van Brocklin is on the spot as the expansion Falcons make their first real run at a title. Theyve got an easier schedule than San Francisco but lack a good quarterback. Claude Humphrey keys a good defense. Francisco The 49ers rut. Every year they win the wr ' but lose to Dallas in the playoffs. Much depth at quarterback with John Brodie and Steve Spurrier. No trades have been made to help the club. The Saints New Orleans-T- he have to be the early favorite to gei the No. 1 draft choice next year.
