Show 1 Stock Prices Continue to Spiral Downward By Alexander R. Hammer finished unchanged. The most heavily traded stock was Coastal States Gas Producing, which fell Hi to 84 on a turnover of 158,100 shares. The weakness in the stock was attributed to an article in Barrons magazine that said the problems of the company in meeting its obligations to the city of San Antonio so far this year have cost Coastal States some $1.5 million. New York Times Writer NEW YORK Stock prices continued to reel downward Monday in slow trading, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average closing at its lowest level in almost 18 months. 8.05 The index tumbled points to finish the session at Its previous lowest 885.91. closing level was at 881.47 Dec. 27, 1971. Since reaching a record high of 1,051.70 Jan. 11, 1973, the average has dropped 165.79 points. Prices opened easier on the New York Stock Exchange and finished at or near their lows of the session with no attempt at a rally. It was the fifth consecutive session that prices have declined. At the final bell declines outnumbered advances by almost a ratio, with 1115 issues down and only 347 stocks up. Heavy Pressure The weakness in the market was attributed to continued heavy pressure on the dollar abroad, soaring gold prices and new revelations in the Watergate scandal. The best were the gold performers mining issues. The dollar recorded its largest daily decline of the year Monday against some European currencies amid growing concern that the U.S. economy is being neglected because of the Watergate affair. - Bauscb & Lomb tumbled 3!4 to 79; Standard Oil of Ohio 358 to 105i; G.D.
