There were no TV cameras, the gallery consisted of a few wives and friends, there was one newspaperman tagging along. In the houses and apartments bordering the course, people sat on the patios or lawns, some watching the golfers, but most of them visiting, resting, or working. In some yards small boys played catch. And, from time to time, the chimes of an ice cream, truck announcing its house calls drowned out the music from radios and stereos. Then, because his job as a bakery-rout- e deliveryman made it im- possible for him to get weekends off, Calkins dropped out of competitive golf. Pas That was three years ago and Calkins, who had been so rudely ignored when he was pi jiving, was now rudely forgotten. Well, not entirely forgotten.
