Show 13 II The Salt Lake Tribune, Friday, June I. Opera House Opens Tribune Staff Writer Nathan Detroit's permanent floating crap game opened the Lagoon Opera House's Summer Season Wednesday night uith some losses and some gams. Guvs and Dolls, the Frank l.oesser, Abe Burrows musical that took by Broadway storm more than 20 years ago, lacked opening-nigh- t luster in many spots, but a blonde bombshell named Anne Rowe injected enough excitement to keep things moving. Tailor-madfor the role of Adelaide Adams, vivacious Ms. Rowe belts out with a Brooklyn accent to rival anyone from New Jersey, charms with her solo numbers and has everyone sneezing from her cold. She's the crazy gal whos Ms. Rowe, who recently re- turned from a stay in New York, carries the show almost by herself and is worth seeing. H.E.D. Redford, familiar for his many roles in Pioneer Memorial productions, wasnt as strong as usual. His Detroit only came alive in a number with Adelaide, Sue Me, that left you believing the engagement was about to be finalized with a wedding band. Goes Wrong Two other bright spots were recognized in the talents of Gerald Roe as Nicely-NicelJohnson and Keith Grant as Benny. Together on stage most of the time, the two e 'Guys and Dolls Luster-Lackin- g been engaged to Nathan for 14 years with no wedding in sight. Carries Show By Nancy Funk r 'wwm 1973 y compliment each other especially in Guys and Dolls. But something went wrong with the casting of William Libby as Sky Masterson and the rest of the crap game boys. Libby played Sky as a calm, somewhat milquetoast of a man, easily converted to the faith by Sarah Brown. His character did not change from the plays opening to the final curtain. And as anyone familiar with the role knows, Sky Masterson Mannix scores HOLLYWOOD (LPI) would be no easy convert! Big Jule K. Scott Laytons interpretation of a toughie consisted of chewing gum and talking out of the side of his mouth. It was hard to imagine that any of these guys could ever get a crap game going anywhere. Jill Paxton has a lovely voice but fell short of generating much emotion as Sarah Brown. She didnt seem to love Sicy and when they sang Ive Never Been in Love Before, you couldnt help wondering if they were even then. III EVERYTHING YOU ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW ABOUT CAVE WOMEN BUT VERE AFRAID TO ASK! One extremely moving moment in the play came when Stanley Russon, as Sarahs grandfather, sang More I Cannot Wish You. The longtime Utah favorite appeared to weep as he sang, his eyes ftllinn u'tlh Iaopc luiiitg wuu icai o. audience The responded warmly with appreciation for OR...
