Gary Brooker, left, and Keith Reed of Procol Harum have lightened their approach to music. But there still is a major problem of tetting it together. But that music didnt seem to be too commercial. Their first five albums averaged sales of 150,000 each. Not bad, but not exactly setting the world on fire. But when they recorded a live album with the Ecmonton Symphony Orchestra, bingo, instant gold. To some the success of the live album Indicated that Procol Harum was indeed commercial. The album didnt have any new material, therefore, it wasnt the obscurity of the songs and lyrics which kept the sales low so it must have been better packaging or a better advertising push which brought them their commercial success. But the band didnt seem to agree with this line of thinking so on their seventh album, the former heavyweights of rock have lightened up. This album is a themed production not a concept. It has threads of similarity running through it, like the grandness of the arrangements and the thought that perhaps all the stories could have taken place in a hotel. thought the parts were funny anyway. In a way, It could have been a humorous song. As it happened, it turned out la be like the title, a grand sort of song. It is this conflict that touches songs like "Grand Hotel" and Toujours LAmour, a satirical look at a broken affair. Reid writes, I came home to an empty flat. Shed left me a note and taken the cat." But Brooker insists on singing it in a very serious of manner,- - with layers orchestration. These same A problems hold true on Rum Tale, T.V. Ceasar," Bringing Home The Bacon (the weakest song on the album) and worst of all on A Souvenir of London. On the plus side, For Lico- rice John, the story of a suicide is handled well, as is Fires (Which Burnt Both songs need Brightly). the lush Brooker vocalizing and arrangements. While this album is not the best the band is capable of, the problems dont appear to be terminal. The band has gone through too much already to let this stop them. But I do think it is imperative that the two heads behind Procol Harum get together and decide which direction they are going. Maybe we will all have a better idea after their Saturday show at The Terrace. But vocalist, Gary Brooker, who writes the music and arrangements for all of Reids lyrics, doesnt seem to recognize the changes. His music and charts are still grand and luscious but dont fit with the words. It is this dichotomy, more than anything else, that weakens the album, Brooker seems to have no sense of humor. 1 1 Holladay. - p, V Complete New Concept In Home Furnishings!
