During a1 recent trip to China, I found that while widely acupuncture used was far from most ll ll important part of countrys medicine. The barefoot doctor, who almost always wears shoes, holds the star position in Chinese medicine, in my opinion. These people have, for the first hard-workin- g time in history, brought effective medical care to hundreds of millions of rural Chinese who, never before got any kind of professional medical attention at all. About 80 percent of the Chinese people live in the country', often in villages that have no good road or rail connections to nearby towns. The concentration of people in those isolated areas is by our standards. Regular doctors almost never bothered to go there in the past, because of poverty and the mind-bogglin- g Fight rising construction costs! Barefoot are doctors mainly young people most appear to be under 30. They have had three to six months training at a hospital or army medical unit in basic prevention techniques, first aid, and diagnosis and treatment of roughly 100 common diseases. They go back to school for a week or so c cry six months, and arc checked weekly by a medical doctor sent around by the commune hospital. At least half the time, the average barefoot doctor works in the fields, or does other jobs. But iu the early morning and late afternoon and evening, he or she holds office hours in a small office, catering to the health needs of other members of the brigade. Often the barefoot doctor will also make house calls in the evening, checking on bedridden patients. Perhaps the affectionate title of barefoot before has doctor the word helped downgrade these remarkable people in our eyes, and caused their work to be overlooked. Actually they are highly respected, and perhaps even prosperous by Chinese standards. And because they serve the peasants, who have often been helpless in the face of disease, the barefoot doctors arc honored. OF COURSE those partly trained doctors do make mistakes, but my impression is that problems are kept to a minimum by two factors: first, fully trained doctors are always nearby to give help, especially with serious cases. And second, the barefoot doctors work mainly with herbal medicines, often collected right in the brigades area. These plant drugs dont cause the side effects often experienced with svnthctic drugs. Traditional medical concepts, rooted in herb medicine, have even merged mediwith Western-styl- e cine. Now all doctors in China arc required to about plant drugs, and use them in their practice. The effectiveness of the million and a quarter barefoot doctors with their herbal medicines was brought home to us when we visited a commune hospital near Canton. Although the hospital had 33 beds and 12 doctors, it had very few bed patients. The 60,000 residents of the commune were also being served by almost 30 barefoot doctors and an equal number of midwives out in the production brigades. Their work, and their drugs, must have been producing results. The light patient load of the hospital was evidence of that. FOOLISH TO RENT: ANY COMPANY WOULD SOONER RENT THAN SELL!
