Show ABOUT THE COUNTY uy by J 1 C wheelon Cara gar and iid utah while tt the e county agent is the representative of the state site agricultural college during the summer bummer or cropping season during the winter he may be termed the representative ot of the united states government these winter seasons are devoted to teaching the farmer how to keep tile the accounts ot of his business the 1 idea dea is that he fie farm Is or should be a business organization not that its systems of account keeping shall be complicated or at all elaborate but that some general and fairly accurate summary can be made of the years operations it must come to the point sooner or later that the farmer must be able to tell himself which of the branches of ills his business is the most profitable lie he will not long continue the dairy work if lie he finds that ills his dry farming is making a profit and the dairy business is absorbing this profit and vice versa lie will soon renovate re the profitless business or dispense with it and give more time lime and attention to that part or of his work which leaves a margin for him account keeping is most irksome for most farmers but some member of the family can usually be found who will develop an ail ability tor for this work and with a little cooperation these accounts can be kept the ledger will be most useful as I 1 an indicator of the financial standing of tle the farm it will cause a man to be cautious in buying stock or machinery until lie he assures himself definitely as to whether he will have the means to pay for them the very tact fact that lie is keeping accounts will act as a check on him when otherwise he will take a chance and make an obligation that will cause him much inconvenience arid and regret this Is I 1 think one of the most useful offices that is filled by tile county agent lie he gathers the data that the government requires and submits it to the college where it is compiled with a view of getting averages and comparisons and during the roundup round up these ave averages rags and comparisons are set forth to the farmers in the lectures the names of the farmers of course are withheld showing by classes those thase who made a good showing in profits or labor income it if there I 1 were fifty farm records taken in tile the county the ten best showings will be averaged and shown on the lecturers charts and not only will the labor income be shown in the balance or profit to the farmer but tile the part or class of ills his operations that made him the most money will be clearly indi bated this will be the average of tile the ten best farmers operations of course their names will not be given because of the fear that they may become conceited over the matter the beauty of this si sa stem is that the longer this plan is in vogue the better I 1 and more useful it will bee become as averages can be taken for a term of I 1 years as well as fr fir a number of individuals I 1 divi duals I 1 believe the time will A III come when the general standing ot of ai any ny farmer will upon the showing ot of his farm accounts his ability to get the now w usual credit at the business auses ot of his vicinity in many parts of 0 europe a tanner farmer cannot rent a farm without witti out showing ills his account book the number ot of ani animals nials lie he has been keeping the size of his former farm the kind of crops lie he lias has grown and the price he has sold tor for and what lie he has made and what branch of the business he be has made it on oil in germany there is a line of bank ing houses who make a business of loaning money to farmers to carry them between crop or stock raising returns and who rely almost entirely upon the farmers account book to satisfy them that the loan is sate safe I 1 feel sure that there are many farmers in box elder county who would gladly avail themselves of 0 the opportunity to schedule their business on oil some simple yet effective plan the county agents thru the government agents are perfecting a very simple schedule for this purpose it is true there is room tor for improvement in the present system but those improvements are sure to come with practice I 1 feel that it is a matter of regret that I 1 was obliged to go outside of my own county and apply to a county agent of another county to get a blank book for this purpose and that the system could not be made general in box elder county until the county became organized under the smith lever law the smith lever funds promise unlimited opportunity for county agent and demonstration work in tile the future on the basis of the present census ceniu enumeration there will be aval available lable from the federal government in and thereafter the sum of under the terms of the lmh lver lever bill this does not include state stale support which must in each state be within of the sum allotted by the federal government this does not take into account local aid sentiment tor for which is growing in every state where cooperative demonstration work Is fostered in a table showing allowing the allotment of funds from all sources federal state and local for each state in the union tor for county agent homo home demonstration and club work I 1 find that portion amounts to a total of about two thirds of which is apportioned as follows county agents 18 1 home demonstration work 5 I 1 boys club work continued on pue pace three Tl ire MORE ABOUT THE COUNTY AGENT continued from page five can the farmers of box elder county y afford to ignore this opportunity of cooperation even tho we can afford to ignore it 0 a we desire to reject this most comprehensive competent and permanent system of 0 state slate and national cooperation I 1 beg to submit here the eap exp expressions res si ons of a few of 0 the re representative presenta live men of dox box elder county who have beet been approached upon this question mr C G adney of corinne for the advantage it will be 1 to ill tho you younger generation ill that 1 is just conting coming to the responsible age and will soon be selecting their vocation in life and while it may appear that we should await the action of the farmer himself in improving the methods of farm management tile the reflection that I 1 have given this subject leads me to lo the conclusion that this work musi come from tho the educational institutions thru the public schools and from the agricultural colleges to the fa farms rm s ilon hon john P holmgren farmer fanner legislator and director in many business institutions in the county writes dear sir your letter in reference to the appointment of a county farm demonstrator was delivered a few days ago but I 1 was not at home hence this delay in answering I 1 had a talk with part of the commissioners and they feel the move is a worthy one but doeple are complaining about too high taxes until they find it a task to keep present appropriations and expenses within the levy without increasing the rate still higher the county demonstrator could undoubtedly increase our various farm yields a great percent and do much to encourage live stock stack milk cows etc on the farms and eat earn 11 his salary many times any assistance I 1 can be to you will be gladly done yours truly signed JOHN P HOLMGREN mr david holmgren Holm Holni gien farmer and business man secretary and treasurer farmers cash union of bear river valley tremonton Tre monton writes dear sir it is a source of pleasure to reply to your letter of june 1st ast relative to the employment of a county farmers agent for the people of box elder county I 1 am thoroughly in it accord with your views in this matter as I 1 believe our farmers and community as a whole can profit much by an experienced perien ced adviser in agriculture to look after this great county of our which a great many farmers donot understand thoroughly the best methods of agriculture and then again believe we have in our community some of the best and most up to date farmers tit in the state of utah at a convention in omalia omaha a year ago the writer had occasion to speak on oil this subject before a body of farmers where they were filing a protest against the scientific demonstrator and farmers Fan ners agent that they had employed under a new office that had been created tor for him there was a variance of opinions to be considered at this meeting where I 1 happened to be a delegate but I 1 am pleased to state that a majority of the farmers were satisfied and they retained him and this ollice office tor for the betterment of the farms as a waple I 1 would like tor for one to see this tried out in this community it would depend much on the activity and interest the agent would have in ill this work whether it would prove a success or not your idea of giving a cash prize as an incentive to agricultural interests on the part of boys and girls I 1 believe should be supplied practical education is what we need in agriculture as well as other branches I 1 am not addressing this letter to any club or board of commissioners but I 1 hereby privilege you to present my views on this subject before anybody interested in this question very truly 3 bours ours signed DAVID hon al it welling former state representative president of the bear river stake and director tit in many business tile as enterprises in the county writes dear mr air wheelon your favor of the dinst has been very carefully considered at first I 1 was inclined to with you regarding tile the need of a tor for box elder county I 1 have contended tor for two years glenn now serving as a in our schools should bu be employed to do oils work and that his salary should be ba paid by the government associated with the county as in similar cases tit in other counties of 0 course I 1 have all along seen difficulties we have a large county and tile the work of these officers is in different fields it has seemed to me however that these difficulties might be overcome it if mr air glenn gave the whole year to the alio work in going over this matter recently reef ill ly with a member of the school board lie advised me that mr air glenn was under contract with the schools for the full year and pointed out the further tact that the schools would not be willing villing to divide tile the time of their supervisor with those who have this demonstration demon itra work in charge I 1 have cone to the conclusion that ray my olai is not trac practical and that an additional roan man may be necessary I 1 favor the move and should be glad to cooperate with those interested in the 1 I think the boys and girs iris club work should be andel the supervision of the schools school my aly observation locally hai been that ivr young folks like the club work immensely and I 1 doubt if tho the offering ol of a cash prize would add any roal rial incentive to their work thanking you tor for your letter and suring you of my desire to cooperr ate with you in promoting the agricultural interests of this community anity I 1 am with great respect very sincerely yours signed al H WELLING mr air george al hunt illma clerk ot of the sevier county board of commissioners writes as follows regarding the scope and benefits of county agent work dear sir in reply to yours of june 23 1916 will say that the matter ot of county farm demonstrator was discussed at the last regular meeting ot of the board of county commissioners and that as you desire a reply by july alst 1st I 1 cannot present your letter to the board at our last meeting I 1 I 1 was instructed to write a letter to the county commissioners of your county stating that we have found the county farm demonstrator to be of value to our county and more than pay for the expenditure therein As to giving you some detailed statements I 1 shall give you a few points wherein our man has been of aid to us he has aided farmers in the selection of seed tor for raising potatoes also aided many in tile the cultivation or of tile the same in it particular in the irrigation he has taken a lead in the beet industry noticing the best methods used and encouraging other farmers to adopt those methods in cases wherein farmers have had failures of any kind they have been called to his attention and lie he with the help of the college tries to discover the causes of such failure he can be of material a use in organizing the farmers into associations which will be for their benefit for example a dairy association is organized in it one of our towns whereby our farmers have pur a car load of pure bred cattle to aid them in that industry ile he is now organizing the farmers in a light fight against grasshoppers which are very prevalent here ile he is also taking up the advisability of organizing a cow testing association so that the farmers may know which animals are paying for themselves and which are not without any expense or trouble to the farmer who usually wants this information bur bue take time to get it one county farm demonstrator whose county was being ritva ravaged ged by jack rabbits was instruments instrumental in ill gettin the farmers to organize and build a rabbit tight light fence around the endie valley tn ia conclusion will say that your success or failure will depend a great deal upon the kind of a man you get and the attitude your people take your man must be a good mixer and not afraid to go out among the farmers and do all in his power to put them on oil the right track your people must be willing to listen to his bis advice and at least test it ft out to see if better results may not be secured thereby ther eliy yours very truly signed CEO at M HUT county clerk it appears that
