Show will adopt new system in schools professor williamson Willi arnson outlines plan which should be of gretat help to pupils in the schools of 0 this city to the patrons ot of pe the eureka schools the time for the opening of an other school term is drawing near since we are all interested in the education of the school children of eureka I 1 want to give the patrons of the school this opportunity of becoming acquaint rd with some of our plans for this year in order that teachers and parents may co 0 operate more advantageously and thus promote the welfare of the school children we are planning to organize the work in the sixth seventh and eighth grades on the department plan this organization will be similar to the organization of a high school enthat in that each teacher will teach in each of the grades the subject or subjects in which she is strongest As an illustration the teacher who has arithmetic in the sixth grade will also have arithmetic in the seventh and eighth grades the same mil will hold true with the other branches this plan has a number of addan in the first place the teach er by limiting her ener energies gres to 0 o a tew lew subjects instead of having her attention divided by many subjects can do much better and more thor ough augh work with her classes A still greater advantage will be that of hered to the pupil who is in some branches than in others under the old plan the sixth grade pupil lor instance who failed in anthae tic but passed in the other branches was compelled to take the entire sixth grade again in order to get the arithmetic because pupils could not take work in two dif different I 1 erent rooms under the new plan it would be pos aible sible for such a pupil to take h s ather work in the seventh grade and ais arithmetic in the sixth grade llavina been over the sixth grade a anee such a pupil should find his arithmetic easy and in some cases perhaps not in all it would be pos ible tor for him to master it in a short time and then be transferred to the seventh grade arithmetic in this way the pupil would be saved an en tire bear ear and woul avoid repetition 0 the other sixth grade subjects which ae had already mastered at this point I 1 want to call vit attention to the advantages we can aber to the who having be ome discouraged baa has dropped out if A school for a few years and hence s uncertain about his classification such juch I 1 pupils can find work exactly cited to their needs and can be in each subject just a ast as they can master it it would je possible for instance for such lucils to take eighth grade geo seventh grade arithmetic and irth grade grammar provided they were prepared for these subjects there are a number of such boys and girls in eureka who would find it greatly to their advantage to enroll in school th s fall and complete the eighth grade aa as saon as possible if i there are pupils who desire to take advantage of this I 1 should like to I 1 talk the matter over with them I 1 I 1 manual training for boys and do bestic art for girls will be taught in the school th s year we a in I 1 to have good practical cours u a in this work such courses as will give the girls an opportunity to acquire skill in sewing knowledge of home hygiene domestic economy and simi lar subjects and the boya boys an eunity to become sk wilful in the use of tools in carrying out the above plans aa as well as some som others which we are formulating we aak ask the hearty co operation of all patrons of the school I 1 L williamson superintendent |
