By Olive W Burt “ ' ' lil Youth Activities Editor ' It’ hands across the sea not merely in a gesture of friendship but with practical assistance to war sufferers with sweaters and afghans knit by busy fingers here in America for the com‘ i fort of harassed friends across the ocean f f Salt Lake Girl Reserves turning Into a practical project their credo of world friendship have been busy during the past weeks knitting afghans for war relief Members of the Bryant Hamilton Irving Japanese South West and Debnor clubs joined hands here at home to produce something really worthwhile— a knit afghan But Just at first they hit a snag They didn’t know how to knit Leaping that hurdle with characteristic energy sixty girls bent their attention to teaching their fingers the processes of “knit one purl one” and in record time were doing creditable work ' The girls knit blocks five inches square from scraps of yarn donated by friends of the YWCA They knit and knit and were ao engrossed In completing squares that they did not stop to “count the number" When all the yarn was gone they laid out the blocks and found they hadenough for two large afghans Instead of theone they had planned The blocks vere stitched together at an sewing bee at the YWCA clubhouse Club members’! and their advisers met after school and worked steadily for the remainder of the afternoon Then all had supper together and In the evening they were joined by a number of mothers who came In to help finish up the job It was' real fun mothers and daughters working together chatting together In a worthwhile cause Their birthday Js a family celebration— since Among other Salt Lake' City junior groups that are busily all three have their birthday today Left to knitting for war relief are the junior Red Cross organizations at Lowell Jackson and Garfield schools the Jefferson girls’ club right: Charlotte 5 Jo Ann 8 and France!
