Show A COUNTY AGE I 1 FOR BOX ELDER GO iby by J C wheelon garland utah june 24 I 1 understand that early in july next the 11 president resident of the state agriculture al college at logan will make the appointments point ments for the county agrical tur tural U agents throughout the state I 1 I 1 believe it would be a regrettable tiling thing if box elder chui coui county should tail to secure an agent for our county without further delay the smith lever agricultural BIH alil passed by congress two years ego ago provides a sum of money annually to each of the states to be apportioned to the counties by the states biru biru their agricultural ri colleges in an amount sufficient to pay about one half of 0 the expenses of the county agent the agents are to be graduates of the colleges and the time of the agents during the ile winter or non cropping season 0 of f the year is to be devoted to compiling reliable and first hand data tor for use by tile the government in its effort to intelligently advance tile the interests ai of agriculture re throughout the united states during the summer or cropping season tae agent is to be the personal representative of the state agricultural college in giving to those farmers who desire to increase the profits from their farm and livestock business first hand advice along scientific lines as tested and proved by experiments peri ments carried on by the college where facilities are at hand for the utmost completeness and accuracy thus giving to all our advanced and aad studious oun farmers stocia and dairymen a short cut to the knowledge that many of us are trying to get by slow and individual experiments which because of 0 the lack of facilities tor for accuracy leaves us as much in darkness and doubt as before the smith lever bill r provides tor for a sliding scale in the appropriation increasing the amount available each year as the states and count counties fes apply for the national operation cooperation co the total annual cost of the county agent is around two thousand dollars per year I 1 dont know that enough national money is available at this timeto jhk to enable all 11 the new counties that lave made application for county agents but even so there is no reason why way boxelder Box Boxa Elder county could not employ an agent and pay all the cost for the first arst year until the sliding scale in the national appropriation reaches us the writer had occasion to visit many of we the county farmers round ups lips during the past winter and I 1 was very favorably impressed with the personnel of the many county agents who were met along the way the ability they possessed arid and the success they were meeting with in their work I 1 at a large gathering in hi sevier county bof the speakers complimented tile the county commissioners of 0 sevier upon their business foresight in providing a county agent the applause with which this comment was received showed plainly how low the farmers stood on the proposition I 1 asked ay a merchant if lie he Abou glit the ex expense of a county agent was A on tile the taxpayer lie ile answered that in in his opinion the money money appropriated for the county agent was a good investment that the county that could not afford a county agent suggested to him the swallowing of the camels of bridges and courthouses and choking at the tha guat ot of the county agent I 1 asked a banker it he thought the expense of of the county agent was justified ho he replied that in his judgment the benefits to be derived from the services of tho the county agent were so 10 great that they could not at this timp be estimated that a county that could cold not afford the agent was like the man who provided himself with a splendid team and a good harness but hesitated to buy a set ot of double trees because they would increase the cost of the outfit mr thomas homer clerk of salt sp it lake county writes your comm communication uni cation of the I 1 dinst in the matter of 0 creating the position of county farm demonstrator was duly received and I 1 am directed by the board of commissioners to advise ou that the position in salt lake county is deemed a very important feature to the farmers and we recommend that you create such a position tor for box elder county yours very truly HOMER county clerk salt lake county is more densely populated and the crops are diversified while v hile tile the county of duchesne is ia a new farming district sandwiched with some old and well tilled districts A letter from mr jas 13 L carey chairman of the board ot of county commissioners miss loners ners follows lol lows your letter of may 27 at hand and in reply wish to say that my experience is that the value of the county farm demonstrator tar far exceeds the cost of it in your case there Is no doubt that the venture would bould pay the better batter man ou get the larger the returns you cannot lose by taking favorable action in this ibis matter hoping that this nill ft ill help you in your problems I 1 am very truly yours JAS E L CAREY CARET mr air wm win C hunter chairman of the weber aelier county board writes more in detail regarding the work of the county agent I 1 beg to quote from his letter your letter of recent date received arid and lu in reply you ara are advised that it t will be one year on the lat of july since we engaged our farm demonstrator mr air W preston thomas who is a resident of our own county ile he seems to be giving general satisfaction is among the farmers throughout the county in the first palce he assisted them in setting getting seed potatoes giving advice in getting gettin g rid of tho the alfalfa weevil and also giving valuable information with reference to 1 the cut cui worm and methods of elterm i in atlon lie he is assisting two of the districts in this county tn in arranging for drainage districts which will be of material benefit to the county in A general way we believe we are getting value received and that the money is well expended yours respectfully respect full I 1 WM C HUNTER chairman board of coers weber county utah it is true that this work is youns youn but it appears to promise more benefits to the farmers and a quicker return from the money paid out than anything that has as yet been attempted the very fact that adverse weather conditions have confronted the tanner farmer this year is one of the very stron est and most convincing arguments iri in favor of 0 box elder county having a county agent the writer has noticed some striking comparisons as to the damage suffered by the farmers on account of frost and drouth while the damage by frost has been quite general yet we see fields of beets grain and hay that seem to have never suffered at all and present a normal prospect for a seasonally reason ally good yield notwithstanding the frost and drouth when inquiry has been made into the history of the crop and ana the soil oi which it is grown it Is found most generally that the conditions are not due to some phenomenal reason that the crop has escaped the frost or drouth but because of the careful businesslike management of the crop and the thorough cultivation of the soil in the case of our best fields of 0 sugar beets potatoes and spring grain we find that the land has been plowed deeply in the fall of the year during the winter arid and worked down with disk or harrow early ill iii the the spring in the caes of our bet best hay crops the condition generally reveals itself in the tact fact that intensive cultivation has been applied during the early spring months this treatment applied to alfalfa will add increased vitality and resistance power to the plant giving it a much more healthy and rapid growth than it could otherwise have it also mulches the soil and aids materially in conserving the winter moisture wid and last but by no means least it is the ony only practical means ot of controlling the alfalfa weevil in the case of our wu ter wheat on dry farms of which there are many good stands ot of grain despite the fact that it has been dry and frosty the history of these promising fields of grain tell us that the land was summer fallowes fallowed tall fall owed last year was lowed very early in the season say april and may and then constantly cultivated all summer in order to kill every weed and conserve the moisture mois tuie for the present years crop ahila on oil the other hand had it not been for the careful administration of these scientific principles of farm management the cases pointed to would have found the crops low in vitality and absence of moisture in the soil arid and as a result they would have succumbed to frost arid and drouth the careful application of farm farin management and farm operations has made it possible for these different crops referred to to make their present showing for profit and success and given them the power to survive against odds odda the very fact that cases and conditions of the kind referred to are few and isolated is an all immense in argument in favor of a county farm demonstrator ithe county agent would have an immense field right here to lo get our farmers to so intelli genty manage their farm work that they could meet a condition such its as exists this year without such a severe loss as will be generally felt and suffered on account of the prevailing treat frost and drouth one farmer who has acres of dry land wheat was heard to say bay only yesterday that he would take floew tor for his crop this year while there Is a field of grain less than a mile from him that looks promising tor for 25 or 30 bushels per acre had there been a an active wide awake agent county agent cooperating intelligently with this farmer he could have been in the same condition as the latter farmer and the county agent would have saved enough to this one tanner farmer alone to more than equal a years year a ex expense P ense of carrying the work these comparisons and conditions show liow that the there ye is no argument so strong in favoro of establishing this work vork as the condition which our farmers have had to meet this year thru out this immense county which is almost an empire within itself looking at this from the intelligent view point it is folly to say that the county would be any ways ways at all improver dished by supporting this work or on the other hand they would be enriched a thousand fold as shown by the concrete examples above referred to this county demonstration wo work rk is s a great big forward movement in rural education destined to reach the rural population of america it is going to reach the farming class 0 of f people in a way that has never hell accomplished before it is going to teach them a estem system of farm accounts farm management and scientific farni farm operations and thereby increase their profits raise their standards of liv ing and make for better farms and letter better homes wherein abides the constant hope of america it is to tie be hoped that the progressive people of box elder elde r county wit proclaim themselves in bavor favor ot of this educational movement an and d avail themselves of tile the cooperative opportunity for educating 9 our farmers which the government and the state agriculture al college are offering |
