for the ordinance of baptism for the dea or other rites instituted later In the Nauvoo temple constructed on a more pretentious scale such provision was made On November 8 1841 font for vicarious baptism for the dead was ready for dedication which was done by Joseph Smith long before the temple in its entirety was completed The last stone of the temple was laid May 24 1845 with impressive ceremony under the direction of Brigham Young and other members of the council of the twelve apostles on which occasion it was recorded that all had received their endowments in the temple By October 1845 the building was advanced sufficiently that large assemblies spects thVm " The Relief society pilgrimage was conveyed by automobiles furnished by the people of Nauvoo to Carthage scene of At the property now the martyrdom owned by the L D S church a short service was held The group left that evening for Montrose and continued westward to Independence Mo where other event in the history of the church were recounted and then left for Denver and home A similar pilgrimage of 78 persons sponsored by the L D S Centennial societies left Salt Lake August 24 They visited Denver Independence and Nau-vp- o holding appropriate meetings and arrived in Chicago August 28 Here they heard B H Roberts of the fust seven presidents of seventies deliver his address “The Standard of Peace” representing the church before the World Fellowship of Faiths After attending the Century of Progress exposition and concerts of the Welsh musical festival they arrived back in Salt Lake September 4 bringing with
