Townhall to discuss suicide prevention BY MITCH SHAW Hilltop Times staff LAYTON — Preventing suicide and helping families who have been impacted by it will be the focus of a town hall meeting next week in Layton. According to the Utah Department of health, suicide is the 8th leading cause of death in Utah and is the 2nd leading cause of death among teens. Utah ranks 7th in the nation for suicides with an average of 10 suicides every week. In 2012, 545 Utahns lost their lives as a result of suicide a rate of nearly 21 people for a population of 100,000. Utah is higher than the national rate, which sits at 19.2 suicides per 100,000 people. Davis County has suicide rates lower than both Utah and the United States with 17.99 suicides for every 100,000 people. But with 51 suicides in Davis County in 2012, the problem is far from being solved. SALT LAKE CITY — State officials will take a look at relocating the Utah Air National Guard to Hill Air Force Base, in a move that already has officials raving about the possibilities. A $500,000 study of relocation of the state unit is included in Gov. Gary Herbert's proposed $13.3 billion budget for the 2014-2015 year, and could provide the mechanism to relocate the Guard, while opening up prime Salt Lake City real estate at the same time. The relocation would make a lot of sense for the Air Guard, according to Maj. Gen. Jeff Burton, adjutant general of the Guard. In order to be viable in the future, he said the Guard will need new aircraft, which the current setup can't handle. He said the unit would have to relocate to Hill or a bigger facility to handle the change. The unit currently has eight KC-135s — the military equivalent of a Boeing 707 — and is looking to move toward a KC-46 (Boeing 767) in the near future. "We would have to be at Hill or a bigger place that would accommodate that aircraft. The cost to replumb the entire apron and large area to store the aircraft would be costly," Burton said. He thinks the relocation would be in Hill's best interest too when the federal Base Realignment and Closure CornSee GUARD Page 11 Look inside this week's Hilltop Times for • • • Base Theater Free Movies Saturday, noon — "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2" (PG) Saturday, 3 pm. — "Ender's Game" (PG-13) Saturday, 6 p.m. — "Gravity" (PG-13) For review see page 9 Purple heart Longhorn service 1 17-f:°1 gar . e-or Bake sale Korean War vet may finally get his medal Military service, restaurant business Valentine's event raises money See page 5 See page 7 See page 9 |
