Show 6 TIMES Hilltop HILLTOP TIMES Oct. 17, 2013 CHINA From page 1 competition. His concerns about such efforts have mounted through his experiences in the field, and his study of declassified government reports and other accounts in the media, although some recent hacking incidents have been reported to have originated from Russia, as well. One of the most alarming details in his presentation was an example given of an intrusion into a standalone computer system of an unnamed company, wherein a remote unit was compromised by an email. And when the unit connected to the computer system, it sought out other unprotected stations in the system without security patches and then went dormant for 25 days. The sophisticated attack proceeded from there after forming a botnet to divvy up information it retrieved by sending it back out in a variety of coded means, at different times, with different methodologies within the system so that security would not be able to detect any large out-flux of information thereby drawing attention to itself. When the intrusion was finally detected and attempts were made to isolate the intrusive spyware, it would delete itself when any efforts were made to evaluate it. The intrusive spyware functioned for six months before its detection. In the process of going through each component in a sterile environment and reconfiguring them, Brown reports that in this example those involved got a third of the way through and it popped up again. He reported that 10,000 machines had to be rebuilt from ground zero. Mandiant, a company that leads in computer security intrusion response, publishes an annual report on the state of cyber security around the world, and has done so for the past four years. The particular Mandiant report Brown quoted described a building in Shanghai, China, built in 2007, with massive high capacity fiber optics and cable connections. The Mandiant's latest report, available on the Internet for downloading, calls the Chinese bureau the 61398, or APT1, which reports to the Chinese military's Third Division, or signal intelligence, and electronic countermeasures, which includes an old Fourth Division, which merged into that division. Those following media reports of cyber intrusions over the years since then, point to the most significant hacking incidents as originating from China, from IP information gathered during those initial investigations. This was most easily detected in the earliest years of established activity, when "Go out and start reading these reports and make sure you are not caught out in left field with your data all around the world for other people to see." JAMES BROWN fewer intervening servers were used, and less care was used in obscuring the activity. Intrusions have ranged from hacking British systems, the Reserve Bank of Australia, NASA, the latest jetfighter from the U.S., including its plans and testing information, and information on drone technology. In incidents where China was in dispute over islands in the Pacific with Japan, reports in the media came out in which representatives warned China to stop and desist in their cyber hacking efforts. South Korea and the Philippines also warned the Chinese off over incidents when their countries were at cross purposes and cyber intrusions were detected. Brown warns that although the U.S. has published reports on reported attacks and their increasing sophistication, he has yet to see any substantial concerted efforts in regards to this threat from the U.S. In some of those instances of cyber espionage, large amounts of information just disappeared, costing companies and federal laboratories substantial investments in developing methodologies and information gathering. Brown quoted one headlined report to Congress: "Chinese winning cyber war, Congress is warned" — that headline was from a news story from four years ago. "It's probably just the tip of the iceberg about what's going on," he said, about the description of the bureau efforts which the Mandiant report identified. To those who think they can identify problematic emails, for example, by their use of broken English, Brown reports, the APT1 Bureau is surrounded by three large universities. He reports that in order to work there employees must take a high level English speaking test. "They probably speak better English than you do," he said. So with the higher level of sophistication and potential loss to any type of company, his presentation, though laced at times with plenty of humorous asides, seemed aimed at alerting information technology representatives, computer engineers, and anyone else with connections to computer and Internet security to the potential threats they could be open to. Even Apple, which prides itself on never being hacked, reported in the media in February of 2013, that it was among a group of companies, including Facebook, hacked by a group from China. Apple reported no information lost, and released a fix for the detected avenue into its Macs via a new software release, but nevertheless the company did have an intrusion. A member of the audience said, "Apple advertises that it can't be hacked." The speaker agreed about the alarming nature of that incident and later concluded, "Go out and start reading these reports and make sure you are not caught out in left field with your data all around the world for other people to see."
