Hill's future is bright in unsettled times facility and also at a contractor's facility in Palmdale, Calif. The Ogden operation will more than double in the next two years generating over 250 new jobs as the Palmdale workload transitions to Hill AFB. Also, depot maintenance Capener on the F-35 began this month growing the workforce by over 100 employees. Hill AFB received the first F-35 for depot maintenance on Sept. 13. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the launch of this program at Hill was held on Sept. 20. Several U.S. senators, congressmen, Air Force general officers, state and local community leaders, defense contract partners, as well as national and international dignitaries from around the world were in attendance for this historic event. Hill continues to be the Center for Industrial and Technical Excellence (CITE) for the maintenance, overhaul and repair of landing gear on all of the aircraft platforms in the Air Force inventory. Hill AFB is the only CITE in the nation for ICBM missile maintenance overhaul and repair on the Minute Man III weapon system, the nation's ground-based nuclear deterrent. The ICBM maintenance group also builds custom launch vehicles for research labs, universities, and the Mis- BY KELLY CAPENER Chief, Business Operations Ogden Air Logistics Complex W ith all the rhetoric in the news lately regarding the lack of a signed federal budget, the continuing resolution (CRA), sequestration, DoD furloughs, and another potential round of Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), I thought it was important for our readers to hear "the rest of the story." Though all of these subjects are very important and admittedly our nation faces serious fiscal challenges in the wake of shrinking budgets, the future for Hill Air Force Base and the Maintenance Complex is surprisingly bright. Originally the DoD directed agencies to execute 22 days of furlough which was first reduced to 11 days and then further reduced to six days thus impacting the mission and the workforce far less than expected. The local banking community has been very supportive in the way of providing debt payment relief to Hill workers as a result of reduced income due to furlough. The depot maintenance work that was not accomplished due to furlough time off will simply be pushed into FY-14 and fill gaps due to workload reductions. Having been identified as "The Fighter Depot," Hill is enjoying the benefits of the new fighter aircraft coming on line. Depot maintenance on the F-22 is currently being conducted at two locations, the Ogden sile Defense Agency (MDA) for satellite launch, targets, test, etc. Most recently, the Missile Maintenance Group built the Lunar Atmospheric Dust Environment Explorer (LADEE) launch vehicle which was designed to travel to the moon for research purposes. The LADEE launched on Saturday, Sept. 6 and was a total success thus far in the overall mission, see www. . The youtube.com/watch?v=hfOSIRxXvRo Aircraft Maintenance Group continues to be the premier fighter depot of choice and modifies/upgrades on average 600 aircraft per year. The Electronics Maintenance Group is venturing into the overhaul and repair of EOD robots, a virtually untapped market. 00-ALC has also been very aggressive in their pursuit of DoD software workloads. The Software Maintenance Group currently employs over 1,000 scientists and engineers and has been in a growth posture for the last decade. The software engineering leadership team has been actively pursuing hiring 40 to 50 additional engineers in support of the new and growing workloads at Hill. Given the influx of new fighter, software, and ICBM workloads as well as prudent management of the overall personnel plan, all indicators suggest that the FY-14 and FY-15 workload for the maintenance complex will generate at the same levels as executed in FY-13. All things considered the Hill AFB Ogden Air Logistics Complex remains healthy and has a very bright future.
