Show HILLTOP TIMES Hilltop 6 TIMES Sept. 5, 2013 Requested by name, 84 RADES deploys to get the mission done BY 1ST LT. JORGE L. gest challenge," said Lt. Col Duane E. Nordeen, team chief. "These units are punished with sand and temperatures at both extremes, 24/7, and are still expected to provide exceptional air coverage." Challenges are where the RADES thrives. Throughout its approximate 235 days per year on the road, the unit visits various radars, often in remote locations, with each site providing a unique environment to which unit members have to cater their optimizations. Components on the radars are fine-tuned to compensate for anything from nearby physical obstructions to atmospheric anomalies and even to bodies of water as far as 250 nautical miles out. One may expect insignificant performance gains to be obtained during these optimizations but that is not the case. The RADES optimizations average an approximate 10 percent to 20 percent detection increase which translates to the clearest and most sensitive air picture possible provided to our warfighters. The team has been requested by name from AFCENT for this tasking for the last three years. They are eager to deploy and they have no doubt they will overcome every challenge faced, delivering air domain awareness to the Combined Forces Air Component Commander down range. TAMERON 84th Radar Evaluation Squadron T here were not any hangers filled to the brim with family, no raucous cheering or formal send off. Instead there was a small gathering of people at Salt Lake City International Airport exchanging hugs and well wishes. The loved ones and co-workers gave a sendoff to the DoD's only ground based long range radar evaluation squadron in austere conditions. Recently, the 84th Radar Evaluation Squadron deployed a group of their best and brightest to fulfill its mission of providing the "warfighter responsive worldwide ground radar-centric planning, analysis, optimization, C2 testing, and constant evaluation" to various undisclosed locations in Southwest Asia. This team of technical experts consists of both active duty and civil service members specializing in radar maintenance, land surveying, and network engineering. Together they will work on squeezing every bit of performance out of radar systems throughout the region.
