Show Hilltop 6 HILLTOP TIMES Aug. 22. 2013 The Landing celebrates BY MARY LOU GORNY Hilltop Times editor A crowded ribbon cutting with menu tasting, a live band and drawings at The Landing were all part of the festivities as the facility celebrated its reopening Aug. 20 with leadership represtantives among its honored guests. Gen. H. Brent Baker Sr., Ogden Air Logistics Complex commander, congratulated the team members who worked hard on the improvements and all that was necessary to reopen the club. The commander also emphasized the importance of having the services of such a facility available to offer so many different types of activities. He emphasized the importance of supporting the base club. The Ogden ALC has already reserved its services for its holiday party, he said. "I think you are going to be excited about what you see here today," the general said. He encouraged others to consider club membership and using the facilities for their functions. Col. Kathryn Kolbe, 75th Air Base Wing and installation commander, pointed out many of the improvements as she noted the process taken and hard work that went into getting the kitchen repaired, redone and the improvements to the Enlisted Lounge side of the club. She noted that a team from the Services Directorate, the Air Force Field Operating Agency sent representatives and found 15 areas to improve in club operations during this process. A club advisory council was formed with representatives from diverse groups throughout the base including officers, enlisted, spouses, civilians and others to ensure that "we were hearing from our customers," Kolbe said. "Our goal was to provide an environment where supervisors are comfortable bringing their personnel for lunch, a place where Airmen can hang out and wind down from a challenging day ... and to develop and cultivate relationships with one another," she explained. BRENT BAKER SR., Ogden Air Logistics complex commander '11 National PGA Teacher of the Year to host golf clinic UTA Hilltop Times editor T Malaska tend. The tournament, the only Pro-Am tournament held annually at the golf course, invites local golf professionals to pair up with fourperson teams. A shotgun start will begin at noon. Tony Angelico, golf course professional at Hubbard, recommends that if anyone is still interested in signing up they contact the Hill Aerospace Museum. "It's a fun tournament," said Angelico. His staff will doublecut and roll the greens GOLF From page 1 during practice and championship play, with Air Force participants teeing off at 8 a.m., each day. After the players start play, regular links play will follow and local golfers can get in a round or two and may even be next to them on an adjoining hole. "Spectators can come," said Angelico. "These are really, really good players." Angelico considers some of these competitors as tour play quality. "There are a few golfers coming back who last year shot well under par over four rounds (with play) that was unbelievable," said Angelico. Angelico has been interested in hosting the Air Force Golf Championship ever since he joined the Hubbard team as the local golf pro some eight years ago. He said this was the first time that the championship will take place in September since he has been here. Normally held in October, the usually iffy fall weather to prepare for the tournament and players can expect prime conditions. Angelico expects the clinic this year to have an extra nice dimension since Malaska is known for his instructional abilities, so in addition to perhaps showing a trick shot or two, he is likely to go over some golf swing mechanics. "Participants at this clinic may pick up a few more instructional tips than they might otherwise," he agreed. He believes the partnership of the museum with the golf site fits well together. "There are not too many of those aerospace museums around. It's neat that we do have one right here in our backyard to be able to pair up with them and host this great event," Angelico said. The golf pro encourages anyone interested in developing their game or picking up the basics to contact the Hill pro shop, at 801- in Utah made hosting the championship unlikely. When he heard they had moved up the date, Angelico and his team submitted a package. "They selected us," said Angelico, delighted to have the opportunity to showcase the golf course he describes as "spectacular." The Hubbard Golf Course has been selected as the Air Force Materiel Command Golf Program of the Year five years in a row, and as the Air Force Golf Program of the Year twice out of the last four years. "By far the biggest reason why we win a lot of these awards is that the turfgrass is maintained phenomenally. The greens, the fairways, the tees are always in pristine condition," said Angelico. "I've got an unbelievable maintenance staff who take great pride in the work they do daily." The distinguished competitors will be staying at Hill AFB Sept. 5-12, and practice rounds will commence Sept. 6, again another day local golfers can take the opportunity to play on the same course and maybe even catch a few glimpses of some great play. 777-3272. He cites great practice facilities, including a range, and practice green, as well as a simulator set up during the winter season to help keep players' skills sharp. The pro shop can also set up lessons or will work with its patrons to help meet their needs. 7 ' https://www2.hill.af.mil/rss/carpool.php BY MARY LOU GORNY he 2011 National PGA Teacher of the Year will hold a clinic at the Hubbard Memorial Golf Course Sept. 3 in conjunction with the Commander's Cup Tournament scheduled the same day.
