BY AIRMAN 1ST CLASS TIFFANY DENAULT 2nd Combat Camera Squadron 2 013 is Air Force Material command's "Year of the Graduate," and for Senior Airman Michael Estes and retired Air Force Staff Sgt. Thomas Sanborn it's a year to remember. Estes, Sanborn and 171 other Airmen received their Community College of the Air Force degrees at a ceremony on April 30. Being awarded a CCAF degree not only means being a step above the rest in the graduate's duty life, but also a step closer to achieving their own personal educational goals. Sanborn, a munitions controller with the 309th Missile Maintenance Group, said the achievement will help him gain credibility and respect both in the Air Force and at home. Completing their degrees, however, was no easy task for Estes and Sanborn. "The hardest part for me achieving my CCAF was starting ... that was the biggest mountain for me to climb" said Estes, a vehicle maintenance c-shred maintainer with the 75th Logistics Readiness Squadron. "Once you start classes, it gets better. Another thing is to find a learning style, such as classroom or Internet, that works for you." The hardest part for Sanborn was that the mission comes first; however, many colleges will work with military members and their busy schedules. This flexibility allowed him to accomplish the mission, take care of his family and complete the required courses. After continuous encouragement by co-workers and senior leadership to get started and seeing others accomplish their educational goals, Sanborn finally decided to begin. Now that he has completed his degree he is continuing his education at Park University where he is pursuing a degree in management. "I have a feeling of accomplishment and pride. I know that this will help me in my Air Force career and my future," added Estes. Originally from Cheyenne, Wyo., Estes plans to continue his education in business administration at American Military University and hopes to open his own car shop in California when he retires.
