Gen. H. Brent Baker Sr., Ogden Air Logistics Complex commander, recently laid out some factors driving the current fiscal realities 4 the national debt and sequestration 4 and certain crucial key principles that could help Team Hill thrive despite challenging economic factors. In a talk May 10 at the Base Theater for the Team Hill - Junior Force Council, he set the foundation for his remarks by reviewing the changes that led to the 5 Center Construct reconfiguration. These changes made it possible to trim down approximately 2,000 higher management or staff command positions in Air Force Materiel Command. TODD CROMAR/U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. H. "The reorganization has been very positive in most ways," said Baker, reporting a higher rate of support to the warfighter, as certain areas became more aligned, such as maintenance and supply. Sustainment functions at Hill AFB now fall squarely under the Air Force Sustainment Center; with the Ogden Air Logistics Complex and 75th Air Base Wing both reporting to that same center at Tinker AFB, Okla. Acquisitions personnel are now underneath the Air Force Life Cycle Management Center at Wright Patterson AFB, Ohio. Baker stressed the idea that flexibility is crucial during these times. He said he had never seen so many See BAKER I page 5 NIGH LEAPING SKILLS Volunteers needed to help with rodeo The 75th Air Base Wing Public Affairs Office is seeking 120 volunteers to help with the Ogden Pioneer Days in Ogden. Volunteers can be military members, civilians and contractors and their family members and friends, but they must be at least 19 years old to qualify. Shirts will be provided to all volunteers, as will two free rodeo tickets for each night of service, and free pizza and drinks each night. A barbecue dinner is provided later in the summer for all the volunteers at the Ogden Pioneer Stadium. Shifts will run from 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. and includes duties as distinguished visitor hospitality, ticket takers, crowd control, parking, errands, cowboy hospitality and manning at the animal gates. Repaving to begin June 10 on 4th Street A repavement resurfacing will close 4th Street between Southgate Drive and "D" Street on June 10 at 7 a.m. The project will continue until June 14 at 4 p.m., as weather permits. Personnel accessing parking lots to Buildings 100, 180 and 230 will be required to enter off of "D" Street or Southgate Drive. Let Freedom Ring ceremony July 4 Local participation in the Let Freedom Ring National Bell Ringing will be held at the Hill Aerospace Museum's Nate Mazer Memorial Chapel on the Fourth of July at 11:30 a.m. Congressman Chris Stewart (RUtah), from Utah's 2nd District, will be featured as keynote speaker. The Let Freedom Ring ceremony is part of a congressionally decreed event instituted in 1963. The Utah Air Force Association and the Utah Sons of the American Revolution are joining together to help celebrate the heritage of the United States and the Declaration of Independence at this event. All are welcome. Defensive driving courses in Ogden The Utah Safety Council offers four-hour defensive driving courses at Weber State University in the Shepherd Union Building. Saturday classes in Room 316, June 15 and 22, are from 8 a.m. to noon. Tuesday, June 25, the class is in Room 321 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Classroom instruction focuses on collision prevention, driving confidence, awareness of hazards and improving driving skills. Drivers who complete the course may receive a 50-point reduction on their Utah driving record, once every 3 years. Those age 55 and above may qualify for an insurance discount. Sounds of Freedom event at Layton Commons Park on June 8 BY KRISTA STARKER Hilltop Times correspondent C ome see classic cars, enjoy a helicopter ride overlooking the valley, and some delicious food all while supporting the troops. The Sounds of Freedom event will be held Saturday June 8 at Layton Commons Park from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go towards Hill's Resiliency Program which helps deployed and returned Airmen and their families. Proceeds will also go toward raising funds for the new Army Special Forces Memorial Monument located in Bluffdale, Utah. This will be the second largest event held in Layton, second only to Layton city's Liberty Days, and will feature many family friendly activities. "When that jet flies overhead or the soldier fires back at our enemy, that isn't noise you're hearing 4 that's the `sounds of freedom,' said L.T. Weese, organizer of the event. That idea spawned both the Sounds of Freedom fundraising event and an associated Sounds of Freedom website. There will be a classic car show featuring approximately 300 cars, helicopter rides, face painting and 80 booths.
