Show HILLTOP TIMES Small Business Class gets great interest as attendees get tips ' BY M !KAYLA BEYER Hilltop Times staff ston wanted to emphasize important efforts that individuals can make to grow a successful business out of very little. "In business, you always have to be adaptable to the way the marketing changes, because marketing is what's going to bring you in your customer, and that's what's going to support the business," Johnston said. "You want to target (your customers) depending on what kind of business you want to start." Attendees also wanted to know how to present their businesses to their customers after they have grown enough to hire other employees. "If you have an LLC (limited liability company), you have to have that on your business card, you have to have it on the door, you have to have it any place that you're doing business with somebody outside, because that means they're doing business with the LLC, and not you personally like it would be in a DBA (Doing Business As)," Johnston said. Obtaining fresh guidance gave some of the attendees more confidence in going forward with their plans. "I've been doing some research into small business already, but I C ivilians and servicemen alike were given the opportunity by Hill AFB business manager Liesel Woodard to attend a class about how to start a home-based business, and given the number of people who showed, Hill AFB might soon have a number of success stories added to its community. Jim Johnston, the small business administrator with SCORE, an organization dedicated to helping give information about starting businesses, presided over a group of nearly fifty people with different ideas and creative outlets they are eager to turn into profit. SCORE, or Service Corps of Retired Executives, is a nonprofit organization which receives some support from the Small Business Authority. "During a recession, people are about four times as likely to start their own business," Johnston said. The theme of finding financial footing during a bleak time in American economic history prevailed throughout the hour-long class, with many attendees asking about available grants, loans and hedge funds. John- wasn't aware there was a patent place we could go online. I also enjoyed the 7A/504 loans he talked about. It was interesting," Eric Tanner, an attend- ee, said. Further seminars, classes and counseling in small business are offered through SCORE's services.
