It is important to remember the atrocities that occurred during the Holocaust for several reasons: to honor the victims and keep their memory alive through stories of their lives, to raise awareness, to learn about our history and to keep such a thing from happening again. The Hill AFB Holocaust Memorial Committee will host the annual Holocaust Remembrance Ceremony. The theme designated for this year is "Choosing to Act: Stories of Rescue." The events are as follows: • April 17: 5K run/walk beginning at 8 a.m. at the Warrior Fitness Center • April 17: A film screening of "Defiance" at the Base Theater beginning at 6 p.m. • April 18: Memorial to be held at the Hill AFB Chapel, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. The guest speaker for the event is former U.S. Ambassador John Price. Military members are highly encouraged to participate. Family members and friends with base access are welcome. He was one of nine pilots who returned April 4 from a deployment to Kunsan Air Base as part of a routine security package rotation. After a long flight across the Pacific Ocean, friends and family were waiting for them with warm embraces. The pilots flew back in eight jets, one a two-seater. The flight was a cramped one too, said Capt. John Loveman said. April SAAM events continue Hill to participate in Utah Shake Out BY MARY LOU GORNY Hilltop Times editor 0 n April 17, at 10:15 a.m., if a 7.0 earthquake were to hit downtown Salt Lake City what would you do? At Hill Air Force Base, everyone here will be asked to "Drop, Cover and Hold On" for 60 seconds as part of an exercise set up with the cooperation and direction of Bruce Harayda, Installation Exercise manager. Utah Shake Out involves more than just Team Hill however, as state agencies, schools, businesses and other interested organizations will participate as well. Most personnel will just hear someone come down their hallway letting them know the exercise is under way. At that point everyone should drop to the ground as they find cover and hold on to something substantial. The idea behind the drop, cover and hold on response is that in an earthquake most victims experience injuries from falling items. If you can find cover, like a desk, table top or something of that nature and hold on 4 it is much safer than trying to rush out of a building or facility. 'frying to find a doorway subjects you to the risk of being hit by falling items. The exercise should not generate any interruptions in the work day for most personnel of more than 10 to 20 minutes. As part of the exercise, building managers will find out how much damage their facility would likely sustain in the event of an earthquake of that magnitude and at that distance from the base. Harayda has asked facility representatives, exercise evaluation team members and others to submit damage and casualty reports during the exercise. The state has not had a major earthquake in the last 350 years. On average Utah experiences a major earthquake every 350 to 400 years, so preparing to respond to an earthquake is in everyone's best interest. Check out www.ShakeOut.org/Utah for other information and best responses if you are in a large theater, in bed, driving a vehicle or various other places during an earthquake.
