Show HILLTOP TIMES 12 tmEs May 5, 2011 NEWS BRIEFS Questar Gas work on Hill Field Road LESSON IN SELF DEFENbL Continuing throughMay 5, Questar Gas will be replacing current service lines in the median of Hill Field Road, between Antelope Drive and the Bernard Fisher Highway (SR-193). Construction is to be completed by July 31. Some temporary lane restrictions may occur at Antelope Drive, 2475 North, 2600 North, 2675 North, and at SR-193. Right-turn access to businesses and driveways in construction zones will be maintained, but left-turn restrictions in the median where there is open trenching should be anticipated and planned for by motorists. Motorists are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible, particularly those with time-sensitive travel. Building 843 parking lot Phase 2 on deck Phase 2 will begin soon for the Building 843 parking lot project (parking lot northwest through northeast of Building 843 and east of Building 843). This effort is set to begin May 9 and continue through May 27. Starting approximately May 9, the area of parking lot north of Building 843 and the last three driveways off 5th Street will be closed for reconstruction. The first two driveways off 5th Street and the driveway off "H" Avenue to the west entrance will remain open. Temporary parking will be set up in the parking lot east of Building 843 off "G" Avenue. Havasupai Falls trip slots available Havasupai Falls takes place in some of the most beautiful and remote areas of the western Grand Canyon, May 18-23. Cost is $280 per person ($100 deposit required at registration). Group will helicopter out of the canyon on the last day of the hike. Charity golf tourney at Hubbard Memorial The Hill Council of Governments and Habitat for Humanity will hold its seventh annual Charity Golf Tournament on July 8. Format will be best ball scramble. LOA chapter issues call for scholarship applicants Tech. Sgt. Mark Hudson and Airman 1st Class Brent Cornell, both of the 75th Security Forces training group at Hill Air Force Base, provided training to Utah Army and Air Force Exchange associates April 26 at the Main Store training room. Lunch is included in the $60 per person, $240 per team cost. Register by June 24. The tournament begins at 7:30 a.m. and will include raffles, longest drive, closest to pin and hole-in-one competition. For more information contact Lt. Ogden Marathon volunteers get party As the days continue to count down and spring flowers bloom, the 2011 Ogden Marathon draws near. But another fun event awaits as well — the 2011 GOAL Foundation Volunteer Thank You Party. This year's party will be held the Monday following the Ogden Marathon, so join the party May 23, 6 p.m.-9 p.m. at The Ice Sheet next to the Dee Events Center, 4390 Harrison Blvd., Ogden. All 2011 Ogden Marathon volunteers will receive free admission into the party, while non-volunteers will be charged $5 each. Make volunteering at this year's Ogden Marathon a family event so that all of you can enjoy the party for free. Your volunteer T-shirt will be your ticket into the party. Balmer Memorial Ruck March The fourth annual Balmer Memorial Ruck March will be held June 3 at the base track across the street from the Warrior Fitness Center. The event begins at 8 a.m. and will go for a total distance of 13 miles ending at the Hill Air Force Base Memorial Park. Participants are asked to carry a 35 pound Ruck Sack filled with canned goods for weight. Following the Ruck March there will be a food donation box available at the park. The event is in remembrance of Special Agent Ryan Balmer. He was assigned to the Air Force Office of Special Investigations, Detachment 113, Hill AFB. While deployed to Kirkuk Air Base, Iraq, Balmer was killed in the line of duty when a roadside bomb exploded next to his vehicle while conducting counterterrorism operations on June 5, 2007. He is survived by a wife and three children. T he Wasatch Warrior chapter of the Logistics Officer Association (LOA) is releasing its 2011 scholarship call for nominees. The LOA Scholarship Program encourages the pursuit of higher education for all enlisted members of the Armed Forces, high school-aged children of LOA members, and those members of LOA pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree. This year marks a significant shift in program eligibility as high school-aged dependents of LOA members, as well as LOA members can compete. The chapter will present scholarships ranging in value from $500 to $1,000. Winners will go on to compete at the national level for scholarship awards of up to $5,000. The program requires those civilian or military members taking college classes to research and offer solutions to current logistics challenges within the Department of Defense or industry. High school-aged students will explore and consider the implications of logistics in military operations. All applicants are required to submit a personal background and applicable research paper or essay, depending on the category of competition. Deadline for submission is June 1.
