Show HILLTOP TIMES TIMES 11 May 5, 2011 EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT Right, the Scouts of Troop 55 from Hill Air Force Base dig a hole to place a birdfeeder in the ground April 23 near the Duck Pond so it stays secure in the ground. The birdfeeders provide an additional food source as well as attract a variety of birds for people to enjoy while spending time around the Duck Pond. The environmentally friendly project was done in conjunction with Earth Day which was April 22. Below, Dominic Nordel, Life Scout from Troop 55, takes a birdfeeder over to a fellow Scout to secure it in place. Nordel demonstrated his leadership abilities by planning, organizing and leading the project until its completion. Above, a leader uses a screwdriver to fasten the top of a birdfeeder to a pole. This is his Eagle Scout project which means he planned, organized and supervised the project to work toward his promotion as Eagle Scout. He also gathered donations to build and supply the birdfeeders. Between all the volunteers, which were Scouts and parents, there were a total of more than 100 volunteer hours. Above, a chickadee stops and eats some black oil sunflower seeds. The feeders attract finches, jays and chickadees and are not considered an issue with the flight line. Left, Scouts from Troop 55 at Hill AFB pose after they securely placed their first birdfeeder in the ground. The volunteer hours were spent helping throughout the project with fundraising, assembling and placing the feeders. |
