LUCE jMedical Director, Pediatrics F or most of us Utah transplants, one of the first things we notice upon arrival is our skin becomes irritated, dry, cracked and itchy. This phenomenon is even more common in children under the age of 2 years old. Winter tends to be the worst time of year for dry skin. Central heating in homes reduces the already low humidity in the ambient air. Dry skin causes inflammatory mediators to be released which attract inflammatory cells to the skin. This reaction creates redness, itching, and even pain in the skin. Eczema, a type of atopic dermatitis, is simply dry skin that is inflamed. Other factors can exacerbate skin conditions such as illness, stress, allergens or anything that triggers the immune system. So, you ask, what can be done about this problem? Low humidity is the primary lacking ingredient in Utah, a room Qr entire house humidifier set to 45 percent can alleviate some of your skin dryness. ; Aggressive moisturizing of the skin with a combination of water and oil-based emollients (moisturizer creams purchased over the counter) can help. Minimum skin coverage is 2 times to 4 times a 4ay and even up to 8 times a day for severe cases. Once inflammation of the skin has started, often an anti-inflammatory cream must be introduced such as steroids or a immunomodulator which penetrates the skin and reduces the inflammatory cell's action against the skin. ! Newer studies have caused (Jebate about whether or not to bathe. A large study in an eczema research center suggested the use of the "soak and seal method" is more effective and sanitary than ST. PETER'S EPISCOPAL CHURCH The Episcopal Church Welcomes You Sunday Service: 10:30 a.m. Thurs Service: 1:30 p.m. simply reducing bathing frequency. This method involves using mild moisturizing soap such as Dove, Neutrogena or Cetaphil, patting dry rather than rubbing, then sealing the residual moisture with an oilbased moisturizer. Using this technique gets rid of dead dry skin residue that can exacerbate eczema, yet preserve the skin's moist barrier and reduce the intensity of eczema at the same time. Some studies suggest even better management by using steroid ointment as part of a similar "soak and smear" technique in patients that are more difficult to treat. Other experts suggest more traditional methods like bathing with soap only twice per week and using water alone for other occasions. Soap definitely does strip moisture out of the skin, but moisturizing soaps are available. Hands are a common problem area with eczema since we wash our hands frequently, appropriately so. However, these moisturizing soaps do add moisture rather than reduce it but can increase the risk of eczema. Bacteria commonly super-infects dry skin from the fissures created by the dryness, and inflammation can become a direct conduit into the lower skin levels and blood supply which creates a surface for bacteria to grow. When frequent breaches of the skin barrier occur, your health care provider may recommend applying a short course of antibiotic cream to the affected area and bathing with special soaps to reduce bacterial counts. Treatment for skin conditions have advanced considerably and if the simple techniques recommended above do not help you, please do not hesitate to make an appointment with your health care provider for more aggressive management options. In fact, according to the American Heart Association, heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women in the United States — making heart health an important issue for women of all ages. The most common cause of heart disease is coronary artery disease, or CAD, a narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart. Luckily, the steps you can take to help prevent CAD are effective against other causes of heart disease as well. • Eat a healthy diet. Choosing healthy meals and snack options can help you avoid heart disease. Be sure to eat plenty of fish, poultry, and fresh fruits — and don't forget the veggies! • Maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight pressure has no symptoms so be sure to have it checked regularly. • Manage your diabetes. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely. • Take your medication. If you are taking medication for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, it's important to follow your doctor's instructions and remember to take your medications regularly. Always ask questions if you don't understand something. • Talk with your doctor. You and your doctor can work together to prevent or treat the medical conditions that lead to heart disease. Regularly discuss your treatment plan and don't forget to bring a list of questions to your doctor's appointments.
