The fees to participate in the four-person scramble are as follows: $50 per person or $200 Logistics scholarship deadline extended Hill Air Force Base Wasatch Warriors Logistics Officer Association 2009 Scholarship Program has extended its deadline to May 22. Those eligible for the program include enlisted active duty, National Guard and Reserve members, and Department of Defense civilians (GS1-8 and WG 1-9) in logistics specialties who are currently enrolled in an accredited college or university. Motorists be aware of marathon May 16 On May 16, consider avoiding State Road 39 (Monte Cristo Highway from Red Rock Outfitters Ranch west into the Huntsvilfe area, down through Ogden Canyon on 12th Street. Also be advised that the route goes through several Ogden streets and ends on 25th Street. There may be runners who exhibit poor "situations! awareness" and could be a hazard to themselves and motorists. Avoid the Ogden Marathon route and a potential accident. Bluffdale ceremony to honor veterans On M_ay 16, Mike's Guardian Eagle Foundation will have a ceremony at the Bluffdale Veterans cemetary to honor the country's veterans. The program starts promptly at 9 am with the raising of the flag and will end with the placing of more than 3,000 grave-site flags to remain there until after the Memorial Day holiday. This is the first year in Utah to place these flags here at the veterans graves. Mike's Guardian Eagle Foundation currently places flags at the graves of 5,000 veterans in Florida and is proud to begin here in Utah. The goal of this program is to be able to adopt all cemetaries in the states of Florida and Utah. The public is invited to come out for the program and participate in the flag placing. Angelman Syndrome Foundation walk An Angelman Syndrome Foundation walk will be held May 16 at the Layton Commons Park, 429 Wasatch Drive in Layton, to raise awareness of the syndrome and funds to support research into the condition. Registration opens at 9 a.m. and the walk begins at 10 a.m. The walk will be a mile to allow those with disabilities, such as the those with AS themselves, to participate. AS is a genetic disorder that affects many areas of development. The ultimate effect is that those with AS will remain at the level of a two year old. Eighty percent of those affected have seizures. Most will learn no more than three or four words in sign language and wilt not be able to speak. About half of them learn to walk. The reason why AS is not well known is due to the fact that a doctor, by the name of Angelman, identified it as a disorder in the 1980s, but the scientific community did not agree. In the 1990s it was named the "Happy Puppet Syndrome," because the children are very happy. As this had a negative connotation the name was changed in honor of the doctor who first identified it as a disorder. After a major disaster it may take up to three days for relief operations to become available. This is not the time to start assembling your emergency kit. Plan to be self-sufficient for a minimum of three days with seven to 10 days as an optimum. Stores that are currently stocked with basic survival items would run out of supplies quickly during an emergency and many may not be open. So a properly assembled 72hour kit could mean the difference between comfort and stress or even life and death. Assemble your kit according to your family size and any special needs. Smaller personal kits should be packed in a manner in which they can be taken with you in the case of an evacuationUse the following 10 areas as a guide when putting your 72-hour emergency kit together: Food — dehydrated food is compact and light. Remember to plan for a method of reconstitution. Canned food is convenient for home storage but not easy to take with you during an evacuation. Water — an adult needs two to three quarts of water a day. Carrying this much water is impractical so plan to have a means for collecting and purifying your own water. : Shelter and warmth — emergency blankets and poi> chos are lightweight and easy to pack taking up mini- ; mal space. ; Cooking — charcoal is a great source for cooking : but must be used outdoors with plenty of ventilation. Accompanied by a dutch oven this will provide warmth while you cook. Warning: Never use any device for heat indoors unless it is designed for such use. •; Light — battery-operated flashlights and lanterns :; are the safest means to light your home but there are ;: several types of fuel lanterns approved for indoor use.;: Batteries should not be kept in flashlights.
