Show flMES 8 May 7, 2009 Aiming for skill and pleasure BY LEE ANNE HENSLEY Hilltop Times staff T wo weekends ago, the Hill Archers Club hosted an open house at Hill Air Force Base, in which 50 participants from the base's surrounding communities got acquainted with the club and the possibility of becoming members. "Hill Air Force Base policy has changed within the last couple years to allow civilians who do not have access to the base to join the club,'1 explained the club's president, Maj. Jason Juliana, 558th Aircraft Sustainment Group. "They do have to have a concealed carry permit or complete a background check and have an interview with Outdoor Recreation in addition to joining the Rod and Gun Club. Then they're added to a visitor authorization list at the Roy Gate and can access the base at their leisure to use the club. We held the open house to show off our club and hopefully generate some new memberships." After the April 25 event, the Hill Archers Club secured seven new memberships. "We had many more people inquire about the process to join so we should see several more new members soon," Juliana said. What drew most to the event were the interactive displays and chances to play with new equipment. "We had free shooting on our 3-D course and upper range, plus five vendors from the local area brought their new equipment for people to see and shoot." Juliana says the last open house the archery club hosted was six years ago and the goal of hosting such events is to promote the sports of archery and hunting. The Hill Archers Club has been around for more than 30 years. "Our club is entirely run by volunteers and funded through membership money and funds raised during shoots. We try to provide the best facilities and shooting opportunities we can, catering primarily to Hill Air Force Base personnel," Juliana says. For those who missed the April 25 open house, there are two more chances to join the archery club in their upcoming interactive events. "We have our first 3-D shoot this Saturday, May 9, and another one on July 18," says Juliana. "You don't have to join to shoot the course," he adds. "We'll have lots of door prizes and challenging shots. We always need help setting up and running events too, so just let any of the club officers know if you'd like to help."
