Show April 30, 2009 ping an eye idden costs »/ShOD BY LEE ANNE HENSLEY Hilltop Times staff A fter recently remodeling the Base Exchange building and investing in an Electronic Article Surveillance system, the number of shoplifting cases reported by the Army and Air Force Exchange Services here has increased. Yet the amount of inventory lost to theft has decreased from approximately $300,000 reported last year to $25,000 reported this year. Both reports indicate one thing — if you steal from AAFES, you will get caught. Although the number of theft prosecutions increased, that means more thieves are getting caught by AAFES' new high-tech security systems. Therefore, more merchandise is recovered and more than $275,000 worth of product remains safely on the shelves compared to last year. "We have a 60 percent increase in shoplifting cases this year compared to 2008, but that is because it is easier to catch them with our new systems in place," said Danny Ross, AAFES Loss Prevention manager. The new systems include placing EAS tags on high-risk items with their accompanying detectors at the front and back entrances that beep when a non-inactivated tag passes through, along with a closed-circuit digital camera surveillance system that allows AAFES to track the movement : of merchandise within the store.1 ri ^ Donald Sydlik, the Utah Exchange ~generai~manager, says' "tile security1 ~ cameras present a Catch-22, where people want to feel safe but they do LEE ANNE HENSLEY/Hilltop Times not like being watched." computer monitors of the closed-circuit television ' To alleviate these concerns, Sydlik Top, monitoring system show digital footage within all stores likes to emphasize the word "safety" owned by the Army and Air Force Exchange Service at in the AAFES Safety and Security Division title.
