S IAULIAI, Lithuania — The daughter of a Plain City couple understands how fighter jets, ready at a moment's notice, make up a vital element in national defense - particularly since the 9/11 terror attacks in America. Similarly, thousands of miles away, NATO protects the skies above European allied nations, including three Baltic Sea nations — Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. With a threemonth mission that rotates between nine NATO nations, fighter jets are patrolling and policing the skies above these nations, members of the alliance since 2004. Airman 1st Class Torri K. Larson, the daughter of Jerry and Pam Ingalsbe of Plain City, is serving in Lithuania. Her unit is supporting NATO's air policing mission with four U.S. Air Force F-15 Eagle fighter jets, ensuring the air sovereignty of these allied nations. She is a member of the 493rd Expeditionary Fighter Squadron, which is regularly located at a base in England — Royal Air Force Lakenheath. "As a public affairs representative, I am assisting the Expeditionary Fighter Squadron commander with public relations," said Larson, who graduated in 2001 from Fremont High School. "I conduct and organize tours to enlighten the local community about the NATO Baltic air policing mission and foster positive community relationships." Approximately 130 American Airmen make up the unit — weathermen, crew chiefs, maintenance, communications and armament specialists are some of those here. Aircrews are on 24-hour standby, awaiting an alert. If an alert is given, teams consisting of pilots and crew chiefs, sprint out to the jets and prepare for launch. The F-15s are typically airborne within five to 10 minutes. The pilots and crews rotate shifts to maintain the around-the-clock alert status. When away from the fighter jets during free time, Airmen such as Larson, have made their own impressions of this nation that was once a part of the Soviet Union, and in the 14th century was once the largest country in Europe. "Lithuania is beautiful. It has an amazing culture and truly lovely and friendly people," Larson said. "I didn't know that much about Lithuania before coming here, but the people's pride and hospitality will leave a lasting impression." However, I will have the opportunity to spend the holidays with my husband, Steven, in England." Although Larson is well suited for this special assignment, she has a traditional military background. "I've been stationed in England for almost two years and have been in the Air Force a little bit longer," Larson said. "My future plan is to finish my bachelor's degree and teach high school."
