Show 8 HILLTOP TIMES TIMES April 17,2008 AFMC news and info survey needs 7 leaders backing NEWS BRIEFS Club Hill hosts free comedy show An adults-only headliner comedy show with comedian John Moyer, will be held 9 p.m., Friday, April 18 at Club Hill. Free admission for the show followed by DJ and dancing. For more information, contact Club Hill at 777-3841. A FMC has partnered with the Air Force Office of Strategic Communication to conduct a first-ever survey of AFMC people to determine where they get their Air Force and command information and how they like to get it. AFMC has already concluded focus groups which captured feedback from those who don't have ready access to computers. Next, the Webbased survey will be launched April 14-18. While military and civilian survey participants are chosen randomly, commanders and directors' help is needed to encourage participation. Notably, Hill's blue-collar civilian population will be included in the Web survey. Focus group interviews revealed that some of these employees feel supervisors discourage them from spending time on computers, so leaders' support in promoting participation will be much appreciated. The survey results will vector Public Affairs efforts to deliver the information people want, via the channels they prefer. As it is discovered which products are important to airmen, those products can be improved and others possibly discontinued. Simply put, we need to stop providing things people don't use and improve the products they use. Participants' input will help reveal how to do that. Participants in the Web-based survey will be notified via an e-mail invitation from AFMC/CS. They will have one week to complete the survey. Results should be available in May and commanders and PAs will then decide on the best flight path for information delivery. For more information, contact Ron Fry at DSN 787-6306. TUrn pot and pan handles inward to avoid accidental spills. Keep a tight-fitting lid close when cooking with oils in case of fire. Never use water or flour on a grease fire; use baking soda only. Another good thing to have nearby is a properly charged fire extinguisher that everyone in the home knows how to access and use. Garages have a multitude of hazards. Ensure attached garages have tight-fitting doors and are kept closed to help contain a garage fire and prevent exhaust gasses from entering the home. Store oily rags in a metal container with a tightly secured lid. Keep flammables, pesticides and fertilizers in their original and labeled container — garages are hazardous material areas. Make sure these containers are properly sealed and stored in a cool dry place. A wise investment can be a metal, nonflammable storage cabinet. Consult the fire department for proper storage techniques. Springtime spells yardwork for many, and it's often an enjoyable activity. Trim all tree and brush limbs back from your home. A good rule of thumb is to keep them at least 20 feet from the house. If this isn't possible, at least trim them 20 feet from the chimney. Look for branches near the ground that could easily ignite. Inspect any ladders for overall condition factors before using them. Make sure to avoid power lines and always face the ladder while climbing up and down. Sweep off your roof and clean out your gutters if you have excess vegetation. While you are on the roof, take care of the chimney by cleaning it or having it professionally cleaned. Rake dead leaves or vegetation; mow tall, dry grass, from around the house. When refueling a lawn mower do it when the motor is cool and do it in a safe location away from combustibles. Try and maintain a 30-foot "green zone" around your house. This is a good space to maintain incase of a wild-land fire. Maintain tools and equipment. Accidents happen more often when a tool isn't working properly due to poor maintenance. Make sure you call your utility company prior to any digging. A last tip for the outside of the house is to make sure your address can be clearly seen from the street — day and night -— by any responding emergency crews. Have the address attached to the house and at the street, especially if you have a long driveway. Since it is getting warmer out, it is also a good idea to make sure the whole family knows what the family fire evacuation plan is and put it to practice. The Internet has various fire safety checklists available to print off and use. Use them and the information provided here to make your spring season a safe one. The members of the Hill Air Force Base Fire Department want you to be safe during this wonderful season.
