It was founded in 1846 just east of the Weber River, west of current downtown Ogden. The fort and the surrounding land were bought by the Mormon settlers in 1847 and renamed Brownsville (then later Ogden). The land on which the actual fort stood is now a Weber County park. Things to do: Hiking, mountain biking History: Some of the most spectacular rock art in Utah is to be found in Nine Mile Canyon northeast of Price. The canyon is actually 40 miles long, do not let the name deceive you. Nine Mile Canyon is remote, hostile, unblemished and roughly beautiful. Called "the world's longest art gallery" it is home to numerous rock art panels, including the famous "Hunter Panel." Most of the rock art was created by the Fremont Indians who occupied this area some 1,000 years ago. BETH SCHLANKER/Standard-Examiner Field Elementary School fourth-graders Claudia Jones, 10 (right), and Isabelle Rigby, 10, check out the inside of a tent during Kids' Deployment Day at Hill Air Force Base on April 10. The event is designed to give kids firsthand knowledge of what is involved in a real military deployment. ACTIVITY From page 1 Field Elementary School and have at least one parent serving active duty in the Air Force. Lyon said long separations are simply a fact of life when it comes to a career in the military, but open family discussions are important in maintaining a healthy relationship after parents deploy. "This is not exactly what goes on when we deploy, but it provides the children with something to hold onto when thenparents start talking about deploying," Lyon said. "We try to make it really upbeat and positive so we can give the kids and parents an opportunity to have some dialogue and start talking about all the things that come when a parent deploys." Hill Field Elementary stu- dent A.J. Coppersmith's father, Tom, will leave for Iraq later this month. A.J. said being with friends who share a similar experience makes the deployment exercise worthwhile. "This helps because I can be here with my friends, and they all have dads that are leaving, too," he said. "Plus we can see what happens to them when they leave." A.J.'s mother, Liz, said the deployment activity was something new to her family, but it seemed to be worthwhile. "My husband usually deploys every few years, so in a way, we are kind of used to it," she said. "But you look for new ways to make it easier and just make it an overall smoother process. I think this activity will do that." Hill has held the mock deployment every April for the last eight years, as April has been designated as the month of the military child.
