BOMBS From 1 environmental official from Hill Air Force Base who is overseeing the cleanup for the Roy plume, said TCE passes through the barrier and reacts with the iron filings. It reacts to the iron and creates a chemical that is nontoxic and readily breaks down. TCE is the chemical that has been most commonly found in the 12 plumes of contamination linked to Hill. The chemical was used as a degreaser on base in the 1960s and 70s. Hill officials bought the iron filings commercially for the Roy barrier, but began exploring the idea of recycling the old bombs after that installation. Once the dummy bombs are gathered on the test range, they are typically crushed to a smaller size and recycled, Roginske said. He said local officials have been investigating how to break down the iron, which is very hard, to an even finer powder similar to pencil shavings. After some investigation, they found a company in Buffalo, N.Y., that was able to break down the iron. The filings were sent to a test lab in Vancouver, B.C., which showed that the filings did help break down TCE. "We've tested this in the lab. The next step is to see if we can crush it here, and the last step would be to put it in the ground," Roginske said. He said base officials will buy equipment in 2008 to crush the bombs and move ahead with a potential use of the filings in a treatability study. Roginske suggested that if the process is adopted and becomes part of Hill's cleanup solution, the potential source for dummy bombs could extend far beyond Hill's test range. He said a number of Department of Defense installations deal with dummy bombs, and they could all potentially become sources for the iron filings needed to help in the toxic cleanup effort.
