BY DARRELL RECTOR Hill Top Times correspondent S YRACUSE — It was everything from kids scampering through a pumpkin patch to adults and kids alike from Hill Air Force Base taking an old-fashioned hayride at Black Island Farms last week. For the past three years, Black Island Farms has opened this event to military families on a special night to show its appreciation of those sacrifices. In sponsorship with Webster University, located on base, it has become a highlight to families with a spouse who may be deployed and for the kids, it is a natural playground that ran until Halloween. The program is called Heart to Heart. To the kids coming to the farm, it is a chance to just have fun with all the room in the world to roam about the various activities going on. MATTHEW HATFIELD/Standard-Examiner Abbie Smith, whose father is serving in Iraq for the second time with the Utah National Guard, picks out a pumpkin at Black Island Farms in Syracuse. Children of deployed military members visited the farm last week as part of a partnership between Webster University and the Hill Air Force Base Airman & Family Readiness Center's Hearts Apart program. According to Air Force Tech Sgt. Jennifer Myon, who works with the program, it is a a way to get to see the good that comes out of events like this. "I can't go anywhere on base where there are kids that they don't recognize me because of my affiliation with the Heart to Heart program. And this event is just wonderful for the families. "One of the things we do in the program is take pictures of their mom or dad who is deployed and put it on a pillowcase for them so they can give them a hug each night before they go to bed," she said. Mary Garrison, whose husband is Sgt. Lonnie Garrison, said this is a good way for the children to be occupied and try not to think about other things for a brief period Kj vJ of time. Lonnie Garrison is recovering from an injury he received prior to deployment to Iraq. "Now this is a way to spend our time and count the days until he is home," said Mary Garrison. Many Hill Air Force Base personnel took advantage of activity discounts offered, that night. "So much to see and do/' said Adren Hanson, of the 388th Fighter Wing. "There is the corn maze and the hayride. There is also the giant pumpkin, the kiddie canal, the hay stack slide and the pumpkin pit. Just a fun place for the kids and family to get together," said members of another family. There were even goats for the children to pet at the farm.
