Hill appreciation night packs WSU home opener PHOTOSAN_D_STORY BY SHAD WEST Hilltop Times staff Thanks to Hill AFB employees, Weber State University's home opener Saturday was a record setter - 17,593 football fans packed Stewart Stadium as the Wildcats crushed Western State College 61-0. The stands were packed with a sea of purple T-shirts, but the underlying color was Air Force blue. It was Hill AFB Appreciation Night capped off with an F-16 fly-over. Before the game, a tailgate party in the north parking lot featured Air Force recruiters, 75th Security Forces Squadron and the 729th Air Control Squadron, who showed displays and demonstrations that highlighted their missions. In the stadium, the pre-game show included more than 20 delayed enlistment program recruits taking their oath of enlistment from Col. Sharon Dunbar, 75th Air Base Wing commander. The Honor Guard presented the colors while Tech. Sgt. Julie McQueen sang the National Anthem and was rewarded with a standing ovation. Once the Wildcats and Mountaineers took the field and the team captains gathered at the 50 yard line for the coin toss, Colonel Dunbar presented the game ball to the Big Sky Conference officiating crew. With the pre-game festivities a success, the Air Force left the outcome of the game up to the Wildcats. They didn't disappoint. In the team's first game under new head coach Ron McBride the Wildcats beat the Mountaineers 61-0. This was better than a 60-0 victory over Wisconsin-Oshkosh in 1970. The 'Cats put up 590 offensive yards including 341 rushing yards, 226 yards on 28 carries from running back Adrian Conway. The 'Cat defense came up with four turnovers including three interceptions and a fumble recovery. With the shut-out secured, the game was called with more than eight minutes left to play, due to lightning. Even though the whole 60 minutes wasn't played, the game will still count as an official Weber State Tech. Sgt. Julie McQueen sings the National Anthem victory. prior to Saturday's game.
