Show 10 Hill top Times September 8, 2005 Flying club holds open house, barbecue Saturday BY AIRMAN 1ST CLASS JENNY CHONG Hilltop Times staff Diamonds defeat Chiefs 24-20 BYSHADWEST_ Hilltop Times staff First sergeants and chief master sergeants from across the base gathered at the Softball complex last month for a friendly game of battle of the bats. With a final score of 2420, the "Shirts" pulled off the win in what promises to be an ongoing rivalry. According to Master Sgt. Jarard Soriano, the Shirts, or first sergeants, looked as if they were going to run away with a lopsided victory by the fourth inning, "We had an offensive explosion," he said. "It was very reminiscent of the one the Boston Red Sox had last year in the American League Championship game. By the bottom of the fifth, we were up 24-9. The Chiefs refused to admil defeat and rallied in the final inning to add 11 runs to their total. "It could have been a very ugly and embarrassing defeat for them without the rally," Sergeant Soriano said. "The bottom line is everyone had a great time. I'm sure the Chiefs will ask for a rematch. It wouldn't be warrior-like if they didn't." Hill's Company Grade Officers' Council has joined forces with a local company -- OK3 Air -- to start up an aero club and the two organizations will host an open house and barbecue at Ogden Hinkley Airport 11 a.m.-l p.m., Saturday for anyone interested in learning to fly. There is no admission fee for the event. "Our main goal behind trying to organize the club is to get people around the base and their families to meet and share the enjoyment of flying regardless of their rank or their job," said 2nd Lt. Erik Dofelmier, CGOC community relations chairperson. "We want to spread the word about the club and urge folks to come and meet and greet the instructors and take a look at the aircraft they will be flying." There will also be an opportunity for people to take a discovery flight, which lasts around 30 to 40 minutes.
