Show The Salt Lake Tribune B2 Cornered by Baldwin UTAH Wednesday February i - 11 1998 Elementary May Fall Back on Tradition Year-Roun- d BY HILARY GROUTAGE THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE school may The angst of year-roun- d be easing a little at Layton Elementary School For years families with children in elementary schools as well as traditional secondary schools have faced a yearly dilemma scheduling vacations during the few summer weeks elementary school is not in session and finding child care for the litk tle ones during periods for weeks at a time when their older siblings are in school But if school board members agree and the sense is they will most children with older siblings will return to a traditional schedule next fall that will be added to the schools year-roun- d calendar Relieved parents have first-grad-e teacher Julie Ferreira to thank "What happened was I got the calendar from the district and saw the traditional schedule added to the bottom of it I looked at it and realized I could be teaching it she said We just decided it would be a service to our community year-roun- "We have a lot of teachers with children on the secondary system and they are very excited We have teachers here that too Our main thing is not to beat down like year-roun- d year-roun- d or belittle the system We just want to make it better d Julio Forrolra First-grad- e teacher off-trac- We should get out more The calendar she refers to is a complicated multicolored guide to when classes begin and end for students on a schedule At any time year-roun- d three tracks are in session and at k least one is freeing up space in the school schedules Even with year-roun- d many schools in Davis County are so crowded they have portable classrooms on playgrounds Layton Elementary has six portables neighboring Syracuse Elementary has 11 But the change at Layton Elementary does not mean an end to year-roun- d school in the district off-trac- Its unique I dont know if there is another school where this would work" said Dale Barnett director of elementary schools for the Davis County School District In the case of Layton Elementary there are five classes at each grade level To create the traditional track one teacher from each grade will transfer to the traditional schedule Ferreira said it will not be difficult to fill the slots We have a lot of teachers with children on the secondary system and they are very excited We have teachers too Our here that like year-round main thing is not to beat down year-roun- d or belittle the system We just want to make it better she said Ferreira and colleague Marie Stevenson got a $2500 grant to compile the data for the proposal and found that the new track will have about 176 students The only problem was in next years fifth grade where 77 students have siblings in junior high and students high school and only 28-3- 2 can be accommodated on the new schedule Some parents might be surprised even to hear about the plan WTe told our community council and we told the FTA We didnt want to survey the parents and start stirring a hornets nest Were just going to let it lie until it passes" Ferreira said Besides Barnett said the additional track will likely be a temporary solution Three new elementary schools will open in the area by the 1999-200- 0 school year requiring that boundaries be completely redrawn There wont be five classes on every track after that Barnett said The Davis County School Board votes on the proposal Tuesday Suspect Bound Over for Trial In Robbery of Tire Heir Home-Invasio- n FOR THE RECORD BOY charges nearly identical to Robinsons in the home invasion She is to appear for a scheduling hearing Feb 19 before Judge LA Dever The robbery started about 7:30 am when house guest Francis MacKenzie
