It has the word wish in it A resolution needs to be more concrete Weighty Goal: An appro- priate NYR would he to set a goal of weighing less than said Dumpster mainly by assigning yourself a goal weight Say oh absolutely no more than a Trash Masher including mar-hie counter top The important thing is to be realistic Set goals you can reach preferably without the use of illegal drugs and beat- ings Think the resolution through made My first resolution when I was 9 was to go the entire year without being stung by a wasp It was a good NYR but I didnt think it through Proof came in June when I was stung 11 times in 30 seconds The experience helped me further refine the resolution to not squirt wasp nests with the hose Writing down your NYRs is an essential part of the process Experts claim written goals are much harder to ignore especially if you write them on your face with a tattoo gun A good written goal for someone trying to get out of debt would be to write Avoid all further contact with loan sharks" on both leg casts mid-Augu- st The Industrial Ballet dances around an aftarto rhythm and industry at 200 South and Main Street in Salt Lake City Utah-Arizo- For Revelers First Night Is All Right BY BRANDON GR1GG$ THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE The celebratory New Years Eve spirit bubbled across the Wasatch Front on Wednesday as First Night revelers danced painted their faces and buried each other in a giant sandbox Oh and their parents enjoyed themselves too Were having a great time said Ed Lew of La Canada Calif who brought his family to Utah for a ski trip and wound up swiveling a hula hoop on bis hip in downtown Salt Lake City with his son Ryan Its been a while said Lew when asked about g his prowess You do things on New Years Eve you dont otherwise do That was certainly the case Wednesday night as tens of thousands of celebrants from Ogden to Provo braved chilly temperatures and a light fog to ring in 1998 The alcohol-fre- e event marking its fifth year in Salt Lake City is celebrated in 170 cities across the country One of the most popular events in Utah was the beach party at the Salt Palace where throngs watched a volleyball tournament and aggressive NYRs as a divorce completed novel Zen achievement or the dictatorship of a medium-sir- e countries The absolute most important part of an NYR is the one thing that experts in this field have ignored More than anything else it is the one factor that makes an NYR successful and satisfying Do not forget to JorJ your NYR over other people Being insufferable about your NYR encourages other people to help you keep your resolution I For example say you want to quit smoking Seek out people who are still smoking and needle them about what you are no longer doing to your lungs Yup its been 46 hours and 1 3 minutes and I feel better already You know youre falling yourself don't you? Later when you try to cadge i smoke off these people they will either gleefully remind NYR you of your or punch you in the face Either way you will not get the smoke and that puts yon one step closer to success Furthermore any sign of NYR progress should be exploited to the max If after a couple of months of dieting you can finally get your butt into the car without having to back in first you should run out and purchase some Span-de- x clothing Put it on and go oat m public The looks on peoples face will help remind fou that you siS have a long way to Good luck high-minde- p Robert Kirby But not by much It was wanner than normal But not by much It did not snow as much as usual But the mountains did just fine It was a rather year Nothing really stood out observed National Weather Service meteorologist William Alder Not that the year didnt have its moments The mountain snowpack was deep enough at the end of January that comparisons were made to the flood years of 1983 and 1984 P t the storms eased off thereafter leaving April 1 snowpack totals close to normal After being dormant for several years the summer monsoons were active across southern Utah in August and September Flash floods were prevalent and deadly in canyon country the most tragic case being a torrent that killed 11 tourists in Antelope Canyon south of the border And overlooking the entire year was the ominous possibility that the latest version of El Nifio could render 1998 a weather year that would make 83 and 84 seem placid But in keeping with the weather-yea- r theme the big buildup did not result in a worst-cas- e scenario As is his custom Alder rated the years weather events according to their impact on life and property His Top 10 list for 1997: 1 Avalanches killed four and injured three 2 Three of the deaths occurred the night of Jan when a slide below Logan Peak buried a tent with three backcountry skiers inside Two weeks later an ice climber was swept to his death by an avalanche s near Bridal Veil Falls in Provo Canyon Other struck a cabin at Sundance Ski Resort partially buried a snowshoer in Big Cottonwood Canyon for 90 minutes and severely injured a Utah State University student skiing in Providence Canyon 2 Two people were killed in windstorms One man died Aug 12 when he was hit by a dead branch knocked out of a tree in a campground in Hobble tree Creek Canyon A week later a fell on a Murray girl moving her sleeping bag from a tent to a van during a camping trip in the Uinta Mountains 3 A Boy Scout leader was killed and a companion was knocked unconscious in mid-Jul- y when they were hit by lightning in the Uintas 4 Thunderstorms Jan 3 unleashed more than 2 inches of rain m five hours in St George generating j THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Nasty weather and icy roads have been had news for patrol cars in Salt Lake County these past two weeks Early Christmas morning two Utah Highway Patrol vehicles were damaged when a Newspaper Agency Carp van slid out of control in Parleys Canyon And a week earlier three Salt Lake County Sheriffs cars were smashed one after another as each was dispatched to an accident and skidded into the same utility pole The Christmas collision in Parleys Canyon occurred about 3 a m as troopers Shad Simpson and Jim Ferguson were helping a stranded motorist whose car had slid off the road The troopers ran for cover when they heard screeching tires and saw the van spinning toward them The van slammed into the rear of Fergusons Dodge Ram which in turn struck Simpsons cruiser Then the van rolled Driver Mike Williams 32 was not injured but the newspaper van was totaled Damage to the UKP vehicles was estimated at about chase away fog 3 Lawmaker Delivers Bill to Punish Mail Theft BY SHIA KAPOS THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE If the mailbox isnt bashed in then the mail itself is stolen And Jay Atkinson is tired of it The West Valley City letter carrier has turned to Rep Brent Goodfellow to help solve the problem Goodfellow Valley City is proposing a bill that would make mail theft and destruction of mailboxes felonies under Utah law Such crimes now fall under federal not state jurisdiction We think in terms of mail theft as federal law so we call the feds and they come in and prosecute says Goodfellow But theres so much of it theft and vandalism there arent enough federal prosecutors or mail fraud people to keep up with the problem US Postal Inspector Joseph Sehou-te- n of Salt Lake City agrees We have six inspectors for the whole state The biggest problem is that the majority of the suspects are juveniles who cant be prosecuted under federal law he said He said teens are referred to the juvenile court system Goodfellow sees the legislation as a way to make it easier for Utah law enforcement to combat the crimes We could prosecute under state statute and not have to rely on the feds when they have so much to do and they can only prosecute bigger crimes Atkinson who has been delivering mail 10 years said he became frustrated with the system after an accused mail thief was released after six hours He was turned loose and then he dishe said That didnt seem appeared right After reading about similar legislation in Oregon he wrote to Goodfellow For Gracie Toval of Sandy the proposed law comes a bit too late For years the mailbox at her Sandy home was bashed in by baseball bats or blasted with cherry bombs She and her husband solved the problem in 1995 when they installed a mailbox that rises and sinks into the ground with the help of an automatic timer We havent had any problems since then she said "But I wouy be glad to see this bill go into effect $2500 UHP SgL Keith Squires said five other state cruisers have been struck by out-o- f control drivers since the seasons first big snow storm on Dec 8 And this past year 23 cruisers have been struck by other drivers Three troopers were injured Its scary Squires said The guys working in Salt Lake County have a higher chance of injury on the job than anywhere else in the state" When troopers transfer to the Wasatch Front from rural comities their first lesson is to watch traffic and be aware when writing
