Lake-base- soft-touc- If Your Car Is Cleaner Than Your Soul You Might Want to Examine Your Spiritual Status Depending on what faith you adhere to either today or tomorrow is the last of 1997 For purposes of this column it doesnt matter which one it is (and please dont send me irate letters to the contrary) only that its time to reflect on the past Sab-bat- year So how did you do? Are you a better or worse person at the end of 97 than you were at the beginning? Its a fair question considering that the purpose of religion is to make you a better person After all what would be the point otherwise? People are pretty good about improving themselves physically For example during the year you may have moved to a nicer house bought a better car or traded in your spouse for someone better Say you even lost a few pounds got your lips done and had hair plugs installed Nice you could still be going to hell See God isnt that shallow He tends not to be impressed with Beemers collagen and stock portfolios Which brings us to what God does care about: Our spirituality Me I think I stayed about the same in 97 spiritually speaking Some people claim this isnt possible that you are either moving up or down the scale of spiritual worthiness never simply marking time To that I offer the fact that I didnt shoot at anyone during 1997 including and maybe even especially them There are ways to tell whether you lost spiritual ground during 97 In fact its much easier to tell when you lose ground than it is when you gain ground Think about it If you improved substantially during the year you should be too hum- - but RELIGION ROBERT KIRBY 1997 The Salt Lake Tribune ble to notice One of the ways to tell whether you lost spiritual ground during the year is in the quality of your personal relationships If you have more enemies than friends you lost ground Same thing if you still hate Life isn't going to imyour prove until you get over it The way you drive is another great indicator of your spiritual slide If it takes you more curse words to get to work now than it did in January you are slipping If like me the number has remained the same but the intensity has grown you have to count it as a loss Another good way to tell if you are on the decline is in your preoccupation with yourself Truly spiritual people tend to be more concerned about those around them than they are with themselves For example if you spent more money and energy on getting a butt tuck this year than did on the poor chances are g your spiritual focus could use some I know mine could I spent more money on haircuts If you didn't go out of your way to befriend someone outside your comfort zone you probably retreated a bit Nothing robs a person of spirituality like emotional stagnation Look none of this has as much to do with church or what kind of God you worship as it docs with the kind of person you are and want to be As such it s up to you rather than God as to whether or not you are going to improve The good news is that with any luck God will give us all of 1998 to work on it some more Our job is to waste less of it than we did the year before Salt Lake Tribune columnist Robert Kirby lives in Springnlle The d fine-tunin- 1 PO welcomes mail at OxyMormon Box 281 Springnlle UT 84663 or at rkirbysltribcom : I! |
