suspicion into other possibilities including the backgrounds of child molesters known to have lived in Boulder at the time of the killing But Beckner would not say whether anyone else might share the HOME FURNISHINGS sickness coming to wipe out the Navajo people that could only happen if we misbehaved in some way Traditionally a Navajo who has become ill consults a shaman a crystal gazer star gazer to learn how the balance or hand trembler has been upset Once the problem has been diagnosed a medicine man conducts the appropriate sing or ceremony an elaborate ritual that dramas out of Navajo mythology While medicine men have long been successful confronting sickness that stems from spiritual malaise they w'ere powerless against TB So Annie Wauneka tapped a different source of power drive pickup supplied Driving a by the Navajo government she visited remote sheep camps to warn her people about the bugs you cannot see As she rallied Navajos to confront the diseases Wauneka reminded them of the heroic journey of the Hero Twins In Naajo lore they traeled to their Sun Father who gave them the knowledge and power to slay the monsters that were ravaging the people Ron Wood of the IIlS said Wauneka s application of a traditional world view to modern challenges convinced the Navajo people that a hospital was a place to go to get better not a place to go to die She was the smartest politician Ive ever known said Robert Bergman a former Indian Health Service physician on the reservation Bergman recalled how Wauneka parlayed a failed 1970s bid for a federally funded medical school into money for more pragmatic programs I told her the medical school just wasnt going to happen Bergman said citing enormous logistical problems associated with starting a medical school on the reservation She told me Of course I know that but think what theyll have to give me to make me feel better about not getting it Waunekas greatest triumph of persuasion stemmed from her ability to coax her people to accept the white mans concept of disease in their grim confrontation with tuberculosis In the 1950s TB was striking Navajos at a rate eight times the national average I don't think there was anyone who could match her in speaking to the traditional Navajo people said former Navajo Chairman Peterson Zah In the traditional Navajo world tigating the killing The team under its new leader Cmdr Mark Beckner is reviewing all the evidence and is reinterviewing among others the family's neighbors One of those neighbors is Margaret Dillon who lives behind the Ramseys home and who said police asked her whether anyone in the neighborhood owned a stun gun Family spokeswoman Raehelle Zimmer has said the Ramseys did not own such a gun But the police questions led to speculation that one of the electronic weapons which briefly immobilize their targets was used against JonBenet Authorities declined to comment But Wesson cautioned against jumping to that conclusion If anyone even in the most offhanded and speculative way mentioned a stun gun of course the police have to look into it or else face from a defense attorney accusations of sloppy work if a suspect is ever arrested and brought to trial she said Beckner has vowed that the case will be solved even if a county grand jury has to be convened to bring charges against a suspect At this point no suspects have been named although JonBenets rac view sickness was attributed not to contagion but to a loss of harmony with spiritual forces Zah said So the people thought if there was this izona Ramsey Home
