school staffers have been busy this month meeting with representatives from the four accrediting bodies that have jurisdiction within the Western states that are funding the school WGU will use computers and satellites to link existing campuses within its 17 member states so students at traditional schools will have access to a larger number of classes WGU also intends to grant degrees based on somewhich thing called "competency certification means the school will give diplomas to anyone who can pass its tests Its goal is to assure prospective employers that graduates have mastered a certain set of skills and the school doesnt care where a student acquires his knowledge whether it's from classes books or on the job Jeff Livingston WGUs chief executive officer said the school could clear the first hurdle on the way to accreditation this spring though a final seal of approval from accreditors probably will take several years I couldn't be more pleased at this point said Livingston Its going very well Sandra Elman executive director for the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges noted this is the first time four accrediting commissions have been brought together to assess one school The commissions have set up a special committee to handle WGUs application but Elman stressed the group is absolutely not fast tracking the process Still she said accreditors are intrigued by WGU It challenges our thinking about distance education and it challenges our thinking about how we know what our students know she said Livingston said WGU staffers will select fewer than 100 students to take trial courses this winter and courses should open to the public by spring or early summer Northwest Association Says USU Passes Muster Utah State University has received official notification this week of the reaffirmation of its accreditation by the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges Commission on Colleges Accreditation is reviewed every 10 years suggestions Their recommendations will go far toward helping us at Utah State University improve our standing as one of the two major universities in the Utah System of Higher Education e A report from the evaluation committee commended USU for distinctive qualities that make it a special place to learn teach and work It is friendly civil respectful caring and humane Students have good access to faculty These qualities make the university an unusually fertile place for teaching and learning The committee was especially complimentary of the exceptionally attractive appearance of the campus which in its superb natural setting is most appealing The committee said major efforts have obviously been made to maintain and renovate buildings and grounds and that staff and students clearly treat their handsome physical campus with respect 12600 S 2IOO South 1 reeway Westbound 2100 South ramp to southbound 2100 South ramp to eastbound closed Draper ' W closed NOR1H One lane each way on 7800
