Show NEW COUNCIL IN III IL T SESSION on tuesday morning the members of tho the old city cit council held their last meeting meting at the city cit hall trana transacting acting considerable consider aLle business and promptly at noon andrew L mitchell the re made a brief speech and formally turned the affairs of the city over to the new officers mr air mitch ell said that while he mas has taken a deep interest in the affairs of the city he was r a 13 1 pleased to know he was to retire trum from a public office which came to him unsolicited he ile felt proud of the record u which aich the old c tv administration had made bartic in the matter of closing the gamb ing houses and bringing about a more strict re regulation galation of the saloons mr NJ mitchell itchell called attention to other improvements chien have been made during the past two years and said that he realized that there are still many more ampro cements to be made he also touched briefly on the finances and stated that while there was some little trouble at the begin ning of the ad nini ration because of the fact fac that the members of the council were of different political faith that everything in connection with the city go goi eminent had been moving alor g harmoniously for many montas 8 mavor john response was also listened to with consider considerable abl e in to terest the new mayor was city treasurer for the old administration and has also filled the offices of mayor and counci man in the past mr morley said that the present city ad ministration will uphold the pol cy of the old one with reference to gamb ling and arid the strict regulation of the saloons notwithstanding the reports to the contrary mr air morley stated that during the many years that he has resided in eureka there never was a time when the camp looked more pro prosperous the future being excel tio nally bright owing to the success which is attending the mining opera eions both in the old and new proper ties he ile said that the city treasury is now in splendid condition and he feels that it is the duty not only of the new city officers but every resi rest dent of the camp to boost for eu reka after the new city council was called to order mayor morley read the list of hia his stand ng committees ard 11 i appo it D B cronin P as Ps s city marshal this appointment nas was immediately confirmed by the coun coon oil cil the mayor then announced that he had no further appointments to make at that time an adjourn adjournment meint was taken until 8 0 clock on monday evening the meeting of 0 the council which was held on monday evening was more of a discussion of the affairs of the city than anything else mayor morley was in the chair and council men knowles fennell pennell mills and nelson were w ere present the first question up for considers con sidera tion was the employment of a deputy city recorder for a short period or un on til tit the present recorder mr air red mond becomes fani familiar liar with the du do ties rt of his office the matter recci received ved favorable action at the hands bands of the counci council and land miss mooney there the tir ing recorder will assist mr redmond during the balance of this month I 1 the mayor ai at d the members of tha council all expressed themselves on the question of the strict regulation of saloons city marshal cronin was present and if it he be follows out the wishes of the council in ill thia this matter mattor there will be fewer drunks meander ing up and down main alain street there will be no minors in saloons or car crying liquor away from the saloons there will be no sunday liquor sell ing and there will be less profanity and indecent language on the streets 0 from would be toughs the eity council decided to revoke the license from any saloon violating the city or finances din ances the o 0 may or called the at of the councilmen to the plat form upon which they the nad all been elected and councilmen Counci linen fennell pennell mills and knowles all expressed themselves as being desirous to live up to the pledges made previous to the election mayor vioree said that in his ion it ie is time forthe for the cian cit to have a revis revision fon of the ordinance boob book which ie is of absolutely no valur at this tills time the book was m as published 13 years ago and there have ha e teen t een so many changes since that time that it is worse than no ordinance book at all fhe city councilmen fa favored ored taking this up at once and a motion from councilman mills referring the matter to the corn com cittee on laws with instructions to tg report as soon as possible was carried A general discussion of the water s sv stem and the manner in which it is being conducted followed Wat ermas te rClark was present for the purpose of making some recommendations to the new council but in order to simplify matters the water committee was instructed to prepare ai at d submit a thorough report with the proper re commendations at some future meeting of the council councilman knowles was of the opinion that by installing more meters keeping col cot sections up in better manner and mak if 11 g some oti er changes that the price of city water could be reduced some what hereafter the city recorder will send out monthly statements to the people who a e using city water and in some cases where people have been beating the city out of water ater money an advance payment will be demanded councilman fennell was as selected ted as hasit g agent for all office supplies stationery etc and Poun councilman cilman knowles will fill the same position with reference to the city water system mayor john morley appointed the following committees claims and accounts fennel rennell mills and nelson fire and water g ater Kno vies les zabriskie and mills sanitary zabriskie nelson and I 1 knowles I 1 streets alleys and bridges nelson pennell Penn elland and mills I 1 licenses mills pennell and zabris kie city property knowles and fennell I 1 finance and auditing mills nel net son and fennell laws la ws 1 Ki knowles towles and nel net son the counci adjourned until this evening when the
