Three cheers for Education week For teachers kind and true For books and libraries and Homes Just meant for me and you FERN GARDNER 14 Salem EDUCATION Man was once lowly like the beasts He lived in caves and trees He had no cities streets or farms Just wild like bircis and bees But man was far above the brutes Because he had a brain To think and plan and reason too A mind that he could train And now because of schools books He has 'most everything Such And a radios phones and plane robot that can sing So why not keep our college jnd Martin Our schools and books and all They are the means that always give The answer to growth s call DOROTHY E NEWTON 14 Mona GLAD NOVEMBER Some people think November’s drear And drab and cold and gray But I think it's a month of cheer And parties bright and gav The silver rain from silver cloutjs Is slipping to the earth Chrysanthemums in golden shrouds Hold up their heads m mirth All around the shorn fields shiver As Jack Frost tickles their thin feet The deep blue of yonder winding river Laughs as river and brooklet meet From grandma s cozy kitchen nearby The odors of Thanksgiving float about The turkey on the fence is singing high And the steam of rich plum pudding floats out The night is draped in glistening stars The day wears a shield and helmet t of rain Hurrah for fun and lovely beauty November days are here again! LA VONNE BROWN 12 Alpine THE SUNSHINE CORNER This morning I was gloomy Everything went wrong All the day seemed upsicje down And nothing rolled along Everything around I blamed To be the cause of this I shouted at the parrot gay Who chattered long m bliss I couldnt figure out the fact Why things all went against me Others did their daily work And alwavs happy seeibed to be It made me feel discouraged The day had all gone wrong But yet I found a way to make The days go smoothly on I made myself seem happy No matter how I felt And with all things that daily came With cheerful smile I dealt No more do things seem gloomy Now everything goes right — Start the daywith happiness Arid put gloominess to flight WALTER BROMAN Salt Lake City Sailing Backwards All at once the breeze died down Both boats stopped The water became as calm as glass "The sails The two boats were very drooped near each other Knarf said to Mij: ‘ I like sail boat racing I m always going to own a boat” “So am I” said Mij “Next year I'm going to get a bigger boat — maybe one with an engine in it" Knarf shook his head “Sail boats for me" he said “I ve got this boat now and I m going to get more like it There’s nothing like having your own sail boat " ‘Yes’’ said Mij thoughtfully after a minute or two “you’re right There’s nothing like having a sail boat you can use for yourself Welt here comes the breeze again” Mij exclaimed as the sails filled out “w can finish the race now Ship ahoy!” Just then both boats started mow lng swiftly But instead of moving forward they moved backward! wind against the towards the oppo site bank In vain did both shadow boys tug at the rudders In vain also did they haul up the sails The boats continued moving backwards faster and faster Until at length s few minutes later they were both yanked clear out of the water bj theur strings Then two little boys— the reel boys to whom the shadow i belonged— shook the water off tin boats put them under their arnu and went home to supper “Ship ahoy!’’ said to Knarf In parting as each ofMij the boys en tered his own house ‘Ship ahoy'” Knarf called back go sailing on the pond tomor row ” we 11 (Copy right 1934 K F S Inc RIDDLE Every boy and every girl Has a chance to capture me Just by going to school each day And working cheerfully Now put on your thinking caps And guess what I can be PAGE DOROTHY KRAMER Answer Education ) |
